Oooh, I love that album. People seem to be in love with Fear Of Music or Remain In Light because Eno produced them as if everything Eno records is worth its weight in gold [he's done some crap too]. Don't get me wrong, they are great albums but IMO '77 has better songs.

Anyway, I once bought an Neon Judgement album on a whim. That was not a very good whim. It sucked beyond belief.

One of the beautiful things about vinyl LPs was that you could afford to buy things on a whim.

As a result, I discovered a LOT of music that way.

Lot's of styles and flavors.

Just a few unexpected pleasures:

The Residents "Eskimo" in 1979
NRBQ "Kick Me Hard" in 1979
Magma " Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh" in 1978
R. Stevie Moore "What's the Point?!?" in 1979
and Arthur Brown's wonderfully off-the-wall 1982 release "Requiem"

Hell, it was way less than $10 in those days!

Nearly all my albums. "Whims" were how I got into a lot of the artists that I couldn't live without.

Boards Of Canada - Music Has The Right To Children

Just a few, but after buying those on whims, I persued them like a goatseeking frogman. Whims are pretty much the start of everything for me.

Almost all my favourite bands of the Punk/New Wave/Goth era that I really love are things I bought on a whim. Alien Sex Fiend, Bauhaus, Cabaret Voltaire [that was an accident actually, I meant to buy Classics Nouveax], Death In June, Eyeless In Gaza, Fischer Z, Gang of Four, He Said [didn't even realise it was Graham Lewis at the time], Killing Joke, Modern English, New Order [didn't get the connection there, either], the Passage, the Rezillos, Skids, Talk Talk, U2, the Vibrators, Wire, X Marks the Pedwalk, Yachts, Zero Defects. No "I", "J" or "O" bands in that list but one from every other letter of the alphabet.

When I was an Officer Cadet I used to go into "town" [Frankston, an outer suburb of Melbourne] every Friday night and buy one LP from their "Punk/New Wave" section, based on the cover artwork alone. I never made a dud buy. Later I would buy probably 90% of music based on the cover art or band name - anything with "kill" or "death" or "dead" would definitely get a look in. Christian Death was one of the few duds I got that way.

Did a similar thing when I started buying CD's. That got me into things like Skinny Puppy and Foetus.

There is comparatively little music that I have ever bought after hearing the whole thing. I bought many things based on hearing a single song on the radio and buying with complete confidence. e.g. Heard Stranger, bought Clan of Xymox and loved every minute of it and the next several albums.

Where my record started to slip [pun intended] was buying stuff based on which label it was from. 4AD went bad with Throwing Muses and Zoth Ommog had a few shockers too.

Hoping to be able to score a copy of an obscure LP by Nomex, recorded using the bones of plague victims in the Paris catacombs. Just waiting for the email to confirm it's still available... been looking for this for awhile now.

Out of hundreds of LPs and almost as many CDs, I can think of just two albums I bought "on a whim." A friend of mine whose record collection filled several rooms was selling off a lot of vinyl, and without having any idea what kind of music they were, I bought:

Neurovision -- Telex

Music for Parties -- Silicon Teens

... because I liked the silly cartoon cover art. They turned out to be very similar in ways, both being slick, ultra-catchy, highly stylized, self-mocking early tech-pop.

Wouldn't say I listen to them often but they're definitely period pieces.

I picked up a used copy of "The Legend of Bongengan Bangara Bingen" by Modern Choki Chokies, just because they were on the same label (Ki/oon) as my #1 favorite band, Polysics... they're nothing at all like Polysics but they still make it on the list of my Top Ten Favorite Bands...

But I also checked out Ladies Room because they were on Ki/oon as well... and all I have to say is:

And I just recently purchased a compilation of Cambodian rock music from the 60's and 70's called "Cambodian Rocks". The purchase was based solely on the strength of the second track ("I'm Sixteen") which of course is pretty much the best cut from the whole CD but it's still interesting...

Used to do it every week. My local record store had a $1.95 used cd bin. I descovered two really good japanese bands that way, 'beyonds' and 'red zone'.
