i bought don caballero's "what burns never returns" after reading an interview with jeff suffering (formerly of 90 pound wuss) mention them in the same sentence as roadside monument. i'm a big fan of RM, and in the same magazine that had the artile with jeff suffering, there was an interview with RM's drummer, matt johnson. they asked who his favorite band they'd done a show with was, and he said don caballero.

i was a little leary at first, because i wasn't sure if it would be some weird flamenco guitar stuff and maybe matt johnson was being ironic. anyway, i headed down to the record store, not thinking i'd be able to find anything by don caballero.

fortunately, i was wrong. i bought it, and walked back to my dorm about a mile or two away, eagerly anticipating this newfound band. nothing could have prepared me for what i was about to hear.

the first 3 minutes of "don caballero 3" (first track on the album) had me on the verge of regretting my purchase. but right around the 3 minute mark chaos turned into beauty and ever since then, don caballero has joined the ranks of RM as a favorite band of mine. the second track, "in the absence of strong evidence to the contrary, one may step out of the way of the charging bull" is, to this day one of my top 10 songs. the guitar interplay between mike banfield and ian williams is outstanding.

side note: ian williams' new band, Battles, is hands down the best band i've ever seen perform live.

"You're Gonna Miss Me" isn't EVEN that great a song, and the rest of the album's worse. And that fkucing bibbly bobbly noise on every single track...

Refund!
Blasphemy! :x
why?

what am I missing? :help:

*edit* oh, and another sacred cow for the academy of the over-rated - Love "Forever Changes" :P

I heard one track by The Enid, and pretty good it was, so I promptly bought a bunch of their cd's.....................only to find they'd released the 'same' cd each time with a different cover. Needless to say, I haven't listened to them for some considerable time. Not the best additions to my cd collection

On the other hand, I bought every cd I could find by Thin White Rope, purely because I liked the name. They were a superb band, and the cd's get regular plays. They are a damn fine addition to my cd collection :D

Another couple of cds in this category are by Fifty Foot Hose and Fraction > Moon Blood. Both very obscure bands from way back, that I just took a chance on, and I'm glad I did :D
RIP Black Tom and Beckett. They weren't just cats, they were MY cats, the best cats ever.

Oh! I remember some more whims.
I bought a second hand Pete Hope And The Jonathan Podmore Method EP because it listed a very interesting instrumentarium on the back. Pots, pans, hammers, drills, &c.
It was nothing like the hardcore industrial noise I expected, instead there were some happy tunes on it. very odd, very nice.

I got Black Sunday by Konstructivits mainly because of the cover art and the name (I was heavily into early 20th century avant garde back them). Great record. Later found out there were ties to CTI/Chris & Cosey and the like.

Inspiring cover art still earns a buy from me, unless it's a band I already know. I do believe that there is an innate connection between the kind of music I like and the graphic design that I like as well. In other words, if the artwork is in bad taste (according to my sense of design), then I'll likely not care for the music as well.

I learned this from a friend with a 1000+ count CD collection. It's worked for him, and for the past several years, has worked about 90% of the time for me as well.

hee, and you know where they got the name from? :D

good call, i got their 'red sun' ep on a bit of a whim (had read about them but was a bit dubious, descriptions kept mentioning country... :)) Needless to say I became obssessed with them...

Other notable whims:

Beatles White Album (a crock, two good songs?)
Pet Sounds (I ... don't ... get it)
too many CDs by artists who sounded interesting when reviewed in the Wire (I'm looking at you Venetian Snares...)

Glen Wallis was great in his time... if you can find them, check the expanded CD reissue of 'Psycho-Genetika' (which is way better than the original LP from '82/'83), plus the 'Live' CD (which is mid-'80's live performances). He worked with Chris and Cosey on one of the Conspiracy International singles, also played live and in the studio with Whitehouse (most notably on 'Great White Death').

manowar - kings of metal... the cover was cool, i was young ok?! i thought all metal sounded like Iron Maiden Somewhere in Time, I was so wrong. I lost my appreciation for Boris Valejo's art after that.

Sifting through a $3 cd bin at the mall, I came across a cd with a picture of a skeleton rabbit farting on a motorcyle while being chased by ufos. I had to have it. It was Still...Again by Spot 1019. I have been obsessed with their blend of punk/country/rock ever since.

Albums I bought on a whim that really worked out.

Santana – Santana, one of the best covers ever on an album. That blend of a lion head and someone walking in tribal dress was great.

Led Zepplin III – LP, not CD. It came with a wheel that changes some of the pictures on the cover. I bought it for the cover and had never heard of Led Zepplin at the time.

Thelonius Monk – The Memorial Album, I was looking for jazz because musicians are “supposed” to listed to jazz. I remember thinking “If he has a memorial album then he must be good.” I got lucky on this one. It is a great album and Monk is one of my favorite players.
All I need to be happy is one more VSTi.

Oh, yes - I bought the first Sigur Rós album without having heard a note or anything about them. Pure luck. Thought the cover looked interesting...

I have the CTI one, it's very nice, very... proto techno. Very unlike Black Sunday.
Didn't know about the Whitehouse collab, by the way.
