What is a realistic lateceny to expect when using a USB2 soundcard?

i would think around the 10ms should be stable try 512 samples (12ms) if thats stable have a look how stable it is at 256 samples (6ms)
the demo tune "every body wants you" would be a good tune to test this if you dont have any tracks allready

But thing to remember with all sound cards is that latency is not just a product of the ASIO buffer size. In the case of USB, there is a USB send/receive buffer as well that is usually the cause of a lot of the Latency associated with USB. This varies from interface to interface so you may have very different results from two interfaces from different manufacturers set to the same ASIO buffer size. So you really need to test the particular interface your interested to know what latency you are actually going to get.

Also...would the machine make a difference?
I have a AMD Athalon 2000, 256 RAM, 40 Gig HDD...(real cutting edge, huh?). I also use an Edirol UA 1000.
Im at work right now, away from MY system, but I seem to recall the lowest I could set the latency was 29ms...does this seem right?

Well using this amout of ram has been sufficient for projects up to 20 tracks with many filters for a long time...no BIG problems have come up yet.

i also have the Edirol UA-1000 and i'm working with 3.2ms latency. that's the smalest you can set in it's drivers and it is stable here (at least with not too many tracks). i have an pentium m 765 laptop.

Ok, Im at my system now. The lowest I can set it at is 1440 samples or 32.6 milliseconds...and unlike my work laptop (which I use only for 5% of my music) I dont get the slider to change latency. I only have 4 options, this being one. Also, If I switch from the Edirol ASIO drivers, to ASIO for all (which controls my soundblaster card) I can get (or set) as low as 1.9ms
Aldi, what sample rate are you recording at? Would that make a difference? Should I not be using Edirols Drivers?
Also when I record Midi from my digital piano, there is a very long delay from keystroke to sound coming out of the monitors...another symptom of my bad latency??

have you looked in the ederol controll pannel?
you should be using ederol asio drivers
<i think, i have never used that card> but that sounds like a wdm type latiency

Well thats the thing..If I switch it to WDM, I can get that sort of latency...untested of course...but at least its a selectable option

Im sorry...it wasnt WDM, it was MME that gave me those results...
The only thing in my devices properties to change is buffer size, and its at max right now
I just reinstalled the drivers, hoping this would change things, but it didnt

the drivers are still 1.0 (no updates on their website). i'm using it with 44.1 samplerate and i'm using the asio drivers. maybe you don't have usb 2.0 ports on your pc ?! i haven't run into problems with this soundcard, so i can't help that much. it works flawless here.

hmm...perhaps Im just hosed...My system came with USB 1.0 ports, but I have installed a USB 2 pci expansion card.

there is a chance that windows installed usb1 drivers for your usb2 expansion. you have force windows not to insall drivers and use the ones made for it. at least you did for the one i brought.
