Hi! I am a big PPG fan, so I can relate. I have the VST version, as I cant afford a real one. I was under the impression that the waveforms were sampled, rather than synthesized, hence my question about number of samples per oct. So I guess the best way to sample this synth would be a full 'white key' job.
For some of the sounds (i.e. those that use keyboard position to step through the selected wavetable's waveforms where each note has a slightly (or radically) different tone, that would be true but for others, actually the converse is true - sampling just a single waveform and playing that across the entire keyboard range would be truer to the original - rely on your sampler's interpolation to handle the transposition (and frankly, the worse the sampler's interpolation, the more accurate the result will be ;) )

To sample the wavetable sweeps, a full length sample every minor third will do just fine.

1. when i had my MW2, the presets were a little "new age" for me, along with bread and butter brass/organ patches, kubik has that in common, but once getting into the programming, the MW2 could get dirty/nasty, or just sound good with more stark wave sweeps (w/o filters and FX, just good raw tone)..does kubik posses the same quality?
I'm not sure... - I never worked with MW so I don't know exactly what sound you're after but yes, it can get pretty nasty even without the use of filter/fx...

for some dirty sounds listen to my demo Kubernetik on the Kubik-website... ;-)

(and while you're listening to it check out the nice bass-sound! 8))
2. is it easy and bug-free to import waves and build wavetables from scratch?
Yes, for me it was always both easy and bug-free! :-D

hey jens:

q 1. is a little cryptic, hard to explain...i guess i mean do the raw waves sound rich, and does a sweep from one wave to the other sound clean w/o zippering and such... and will the mod matrix/patching allow "f'd up" results....like i said, as soon as i got a little deep, she shut off on me, but that's to be expected...i have heard your audio demos and they were impressive, that's why i asked you...

thanks very much for your quick reply, i think the purchase at this point is a no-brainer!

Is there a wavetable editor that will work for both a MW2XT and Kubik? I know something theoretically exists called "Sounddiver" but I hope there are alternatives. (Even if Sounddiver were available I can already tell I'd hate it).

You want seriously f*cked up digital noises? There is no alternative - get yourself a PPG Wave 2.2! Crude wavetable stepping through warm, genuinely analogue filters. It's a monster and might take some learning and getting used to but no modern equivalent will come close! VSTi? Modelled variations? Don't make me laugh.... please!!!!

Ask Thomas Dolby, Depeche Mode, Saga and the countless others who made the original PPG a signature sound in their music!

Depeche Mode performs all their stuff now with Korg Tritons, one guy has a Z1 or something. All their signature sounds are programmed into Korgs...

Saga used a PPG? :o

general rule #1: this is the worst advice that can be given!

are you suggesting i get a real hardware PPG? i might as well get the WaveTerm as well  (that's the proprietary wave editing hardware for the PPG, right?), uhh, i don't have that kind of money (i assume they are rare and pretty expensive)

what i was trying to get at with the question: i recall someone mentioning that the Microwave 2 didn't really expose all it's possibilites in the factory presets, that one had to get in there deep with the programming to really appreciate what it could do, that's kind of what i was asking about Kubik, if the presets in the demo were only scratching the surface, if one one could do way more once they got deep into it (i didn't do a good job of asking that question, i tried to address that issue in the earlier reply to jens)

btw, i had a thread going in the "modular synths" forum a few days ago about Reaktor 5...one of the reasons i got R5 was because i thought i'd be able to easily do wavetable synthesis like the Waldorph stuff, i was somewhat mistaken and frustrated...although it does seem like there might be tools to build something like that, it's just too hard for me to do it, and there aren't any ensembles or macros that do that type of wavetable synthesis at the moment..they have a type of wave interpolation synthesis, but not where one can load and arrange single-cycle waves into a look-up table, interpolate between them, and build a synth around that method....

the cool thing is: Kubik looks like it has Waldorph Microwave style wavetable synthesis (the way i understand it)with a library of waves/wavetables, along with tools for importing user waves and setting up user wavetables...i was actually hoping to get some feedback from people that have used the Waldorph synths AND Kubik(and maybe the PPG as well!), to compare/contrast the sound quality/features...regardless, Kubik seems pretty good for the money to me, from what i've seen anyway...

It's a wavetable synth he made in synthedit to wide acclaim, and i believe the compnent files are available as well, so that you could provide your own waves. I think the threads are in modular synthesis. It was 35$ but now it's free. it was very digital sounding.
