What's your musical style and how'd you get into it?

I cam to the kind of harsh electro-industrial we do through a process of finding out that such a thing existed outside my head. I started off wanting to be a one-man rock band without guitars or drums and I went through a bit of an electro-goth phase, again before it existed as a genre before finding out how cool it sounded to run things through a distortion pedal. A couple of years later I discovered that there was actually a genre that catered for what I was doing. I mean, I had most of Skinny Puppy's stuff at the time but I had no real idea that there was anyone else doing anything remotely similar and I never really thought my se last thing.

Huh. You always struck me as a rock guy. It's neat what I learn about you people here.

Anyone know of a genre that combines orchestra with techno?

Actually that's quite an odd coincidence, I always think of BONES as a disposessed Hawkwind fan, circa 1973, washed ashore on the mid nineteen eighties, and doing his best with what was left.

Your style, probably? Though I don't know much (i.e. anything) about techno, this sounds interesting, so why not give it a try?

Unless you have to cover an existing style/band/whatever, just do what you feel is something you like to do. Most musicians do have a clear feeling about that. However, many of them get quite irritated when this is nothing they know

I do some kind of orchestral stuff, but it is not "classical style" or "hollywood stlye" or whatever.

My style seems to be developing into a very experimental avant garde approach to orchestra. Creating cells and motifs and sequencing them, warping the audio, etc. It's not exactly where I thought I'd end up, but I'm just so frustrated with the postmodern music mentality right now.

i have no idea what my style is, but whatever it may be, it was developed by default. i suppose it was a combination of my influences and limitations. i do get bored and frustrated with the sameness of it though. hopefully some upcoming changes in my life and environment will translate into changes in my music.

No style whatsoever, just one sound after/on top of another, that's it. Everytime I've tried consciously to do a 'style' it either turns to shite or turns into something else.

I think it began when I was a wee lad - used to open up my dad's piano and hammer on the strings. Everything else followed naturally.

Finding a style can be fairly easy: decide what kind of music you want to listen to, and then from that figure out what you are best at. Reducing diverse tastes is always a stumbling block, but it must be done. Put it this way, I like jazz, I occasionally like play jazz, but the jazz I've written is rather pedestrian. I have neither the skill nor the interest/devotion to develop the skill enough to write fantastic jazz. There are jazz things I think about when doing non-jazz things, but within limits and rarely overtly.

Developing a coherent style, i.e. something that will be noticeable to others, takes time, as it's really a matter of improving skill, developing confidence and enough familiarity with the style to skillfully expand upon it.

Bear in mind style here really has to do with what you publish rather than your experience of music. Music is just sitting down with it and getting on with things. So in terms of publishing, figure out what your ego can handle as the image for which you will be known to others, and that'll cinch it.

I f**king play Death Metal, psycho metal whatver man and I 'll be the first to answer how I got into it,, When I was 8 I had dude who lived across the street(a long hair) who didnt have many friends apparently casue he would hang out with me,, but he had a big Boa COnstrictor(fooled you guys right?? YOu probably thought Feather Boa) Anyway he had early Destruction, Slayer Reign in Blood and a band called Possesed-SEVEN CHURCHES f**k yeah,, And thats where I started it up

I write cast iron music (Right Meffy?)

I first started writing music 11 years ago. At the time, VSTs didn't exist yet and trackers ruled the world of computer music. I didn't get into it to write music, but to listen to it. I spent countless hours listening to some great stuff from guys like Purple Motion, Skaven and others.

One thing led to another and I started goofing around with making my own songs. The thing that people who never used trackers have to understand is that there was no such thing as 96/24 multi-samples and effects. Computers couldn't handle anything too complex at the time, so everything was very lo-fi.

I was trying to write rather straight-forward rock music, but everything had a grainyness and industrial kind of flair. I wrote music like that for a few years, content in my own little music world. Then one day I heard this little band by the name of Nine Inch Nails.

Holy shit, I had no idea that music like that existed. It had the same kind of rock style, but with lots of computer-y noise and distortion and... And well it was simply awful. Needless to say, I instantly fell in love with it.

A few years later I learned to play guitar, bass and drums. Then I met my current girlfriend (5 years ago, as of the 26th of this month, actually) who was into black metal. I'd never heard it before, and I realy didn't care for it.

However, as time passed it grew on me. Now I listen to almost nothing but black metal/industrial metal/space metal. As such I've taken all of the hard rock influences that I've enjoyed over the years, combined it with black metal and finished it off with lots of progressive industrial stuff.

So that's it. Progressive Industrial Black Symphonic Hard Rock. Not too complicated, now is it?

i was always into hardcore (electronic), and when i found a more adult techno/industrial subgenre within it that could have more meaning + depth, well things really fell into place then

i dont feel restricted by it at all, i can experiment all i want, make it as heavy and nasty as i want, as long as it sounds good of course

My style? I'd write pop songs if I could make them. (Guitar, Bass,Drums, Keys) I wish I could really play the keys or guitar, but I can't, with no way of taking lessons.

In the meantime, I stumbled on glitchy-poptronica kind of stuff that makes me happy and is very expressive. It was quite by accident: on the net a number of years ago I discovered trackers.

If I could, I would rock.
