I turned off a bunch of windows services trying to tweek performance and tweeked it right out of good working order. Now the services don't even show up in the msconfig list to be turned back on. Oh well I think I want to do a total reinstall of XP. I know some of you guys reinstall windows on an almost regular basis. Any suggestions on the process or good links for advice?

You might want to check out XPLite:

http://www.litepc.com/xplite.html

It allows you to remove all sorts of services and programs in xp (bloat) that you don't need. For example, if you're running a dedicated DAW, you might not need/want networking. And the good thing is that XPLite doesn't just delete the programs, it backs up the programs in case you want to later reuse them.

They have a free/demo version that you can try out and the full Pro version is only about $40 or so.

Rock, for future reference, msconfig is not recommended for tweaking services. Instead go through the control panel > administrative tools

other than that I have no advice :\

You want to try this little beauty:

As recommended by sound-on-sound a few issues back.

I just reinstalled XP. My suggestion would be check a few online sites for their recommendations (google "tweaking, tuning windows XP for audio), but otherwise, not to worry yourself too much about it...unless you want to get your head stuck in your computer.

Here are some helpful sites:
1. http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm (this site has been down for a while. Too bad. It was great! Try it and see if it's back up. Oh, I do have the Vipers recommendation for what sevices to turn off...given in several graduated levels of need: from safe to serious gamer/audio user. Drop me a line and I'd be happy to send it.)

2.
http://www.musicxp.net/ (Simple stuff...the basics really.)

3. Look for a tool that tweaks PCI latency. They're a couple out there. Doubledawg is one (I think that's right). But you may know this already, and it's not directly related to XP installation...sorry, I drifted OT.
Good luck!
