I just solved a problem that was driving me nuts for a long time. After mastering tracks in Tracktion I use Toast with Jam for compiling a playlist and burning to cd. Toast and Jam have a facility where you can preview the playlist for adjusting relative gain levels etc. You can set the Toast preferences to playback the playist through any selected soundcard as opposed to the MAC or PC internal soundcard. However this was only working sometimes. For no apparent reason some playlists would only preview on the internal Mac soundcard even though I had an M-Audio 24/96 card selected. The actual problem was that because I sometimes record at 24/96 I naturally have these selected in the ''settings''in Tracktion 2 during editing and mastering. When I change these to 16/44.1 I can preview the Toast Playlist through the M-Audio. Hope this workaround saves someone some frustration. Still can't figure out why Tracktion interferes with Toast though.

Just one caveat, though. If you've recorded in 24 bits and dithered down to 16 as the final mastering step, you definitely don't want to adjust any levels during the Toast or Jam preview — you'll destroy the effect of the dithering.classic dave wrote: After mastering tracks in Tracktion I use Toast with Jam for compiling a playlist and burning to cd. Thanks Joey. I don't dither in Tracktion,Ilet Toast perform the dithering as the last step. I assume the dithering occurs as the cd is burning. I drag and drop the final rendered 24/96 aiff. files from my hard drive into the Toast playlist screen. I then normalise the whole playlist together which brings the highest peak across all the tracks to 0 dbf. But obviously there will be still variations in average peak levels and I adjust those by previewing the tracks and using the gain adjusting function taking care not to go over 0dbf on any track. When I am satisfied that I have the track levels right I save the settings, ,save the playlist as a disc image,give it a title and then burn the cd. I can subsequently go back again to the disc image and fine tune the gain levels further and burn again. I think that doing this should not affect the dithering process but I am very open to advice or correction on this.

No offense but I have never heard of these apps. The names made me laugh out loud is all. Though as I have avoided anything with the Apple logo for many years now, I am not surprised....

Sometimes ignorance is bliss I would love to be able to use Steinberg's Wavelab cd burning app. on my MAC but it's PC only as are most others so I'm stuck with burning Toast and sticky Jam. Vegas + DVD is PC only as well - Vegas and DVD architecht are like heaven to use. Maybe Apple's Final Cut is suppose to be the top but I am so happy with Vegas and DVD Architect. I never thought it would be this easy to make a DVD complilation of video clips.Beardedone wrote:
