Antivirus software should pick up trojans, spyware often gets installed due to unpatched security vulns in browsersjens wrote:I'm not sure what trojans and spyware have got to do with browsers or antivirus software...stash98 wrote: I have seen plenty of issues due to USB crashes, internet trojans, spyware, antivirus..etc..but Im sure you are all knowing.

yes, it was rhetorical - how it was meant is in the context of the conversation... stash said browsers can give problems as can antivirus software as can spyware and trojans.chico.co.uk wrote: Was the question rhetorical? I'm not sure i understand ...
While this is correct it is flawed to mention them both in the same context as if one was related to the other concearning the problems they can cause.
Of course they are related but the problems trojans and spyware might cause and especially how you get these problems is not related to the problems you might get from bad anti-virus software...
oh well, this still sounds complicated and unclear but that's not my fault as I have not started to mix up different things.
To get more concrete:
- without using a proper firewall and proper anti-virus software you are prone to catching trojans and spyware. Trojans and spyware can indeed cause all kinds of problems on your system as they are usually running in the background without you having started them.
- also bad antivirus software can cause problems when running in the background (Norton etc.) but to avoid this you can use proper antivirus-software (e.g. Antivir).
- if a browser isn't running it isn't running.
- if a game isn't running it isn't running.
- if office-software isn't running it isn't running.
- if a proper firewall (e.g. Sygate) is running the resources it uses are marginal on a modern system.
- if you care about your system and you know what you are doing you can install as much stuff as you want and browse the net as much as you want without affecting the performance of your sequencer in any way.

Naive.- if office-software isn't running it isn't running.
Presumably you have sygate installed because the PC is networked. Network cards affect system performance (as does anything which is interrupt driven). If you are connecting to the net via a modem, then things are likely even worse; WinModems positively eat system resources. Unless you have an external, non-software powered modem to connect with, networking has a cost.- if a proper firewall (e.g. Sygate) is running the resources it uses are marginal on a modern system.
Which really is the rub, isn't it. If you are going to go around busting myths, Jens, you need to be careful not to start a few of your own.- if you care about your system and you know what you are doing you can install as much stuff as you want and browse the net as much as you want without affecting the performance of your sequencer in any way.
*Most* users don't know how to disable office assistant, and may well have mozilla installed with the quick start option on. They probably have quicktime agent, winamp agent, and a permanently running Windows Messenger too.
*Most* users, when installing games, *don't* really understand what "upgrading to DX9.1" or whatever the game wants them to do, might actually mean in terms of the rest of their system.
For *most* users, if they are serious about their audio system, and require it to be reliable and stable (IE those making money from it) then they should install as little as possible extra guff, 'cos that's the only way they can be sure that they aren't making problems for themselves. Those who don't really *need* a rock solid PC, or can afford the time to reinstall if crap happens, can do whatever they please, as can those who know what they are doing.
Don't just trade one blanket statement for another though. You might be clued enough to take care of your PC, but if so, you should also be clued enough not to pass on stupid advice like "PC performance problems are a myth" to people who may not be able to read between the lines.
Someone shot the food. Remember: don't shoot food!
