I don't know my facts on this, so don't flame me, it's a genuine question

Does the GPL let a commercial vendor bundle a customised distro together with a paid for app? In other words, could mackie compile their own linux distro bundled with tracktion and sell it, or would they have to also provide a free download copy, and/or make the source code code to Tracktion available under the GPL?

I thought that if you use GPL-ed code with your own commercial app you have to either make your app available under the GPL or (*insert other option here that i can't remember*)

Can anyone clear that up?

chico: charge as much as they like for whatever they like. tracktion uses no GPLed code, but if it did it would be "touched by the hand of GPL" and full source would have to be available too.

See, the bit i wasn't sure about was whether they had to publish the source if they bundled it with a linux distro. And obviously parts of the linux distro would we GPL, right? So does that mean T is then "touched by GPL" or not?

If they sold it separately, and said "this is only supported on Red Hat 7" for instance, that would be fine, right?

sorry, not clear.

they would NOT be forced to provide source code for Tracktion UNLESS they introduced some GPLed code into it.

Seems to me that linux users don't like it when you suggest that they should pay for their apps!

It almost seems like a lot of people think that only teens with no jobs use Linux or something. Either that, or all Linux users are little Richard Stallmans.

It is not so. Maybe those types of people are just the ones that speak up the most or something.

I would not only be happy to pay for Tracktion on Linux, I'd be excited about it and eager to do so.

any major seq would be cool on linux if only good enough vst:s and vsti: would be ported, too ..

i think if synthedit were to be ported to linux so that synthedit devs could easily port the synths they've already made, this would finally launch the long-awaited audio revolution on linux

And what do you think would happen if something went wrong with Granny's winXP box? The Internet Explorer icon 'accidently' disappears from the desktop? The computer gets a virus because she doesn't know enough to install a firewall and virus checker (or how to use them) ETC, ETC.

What does Granny do? She calls YOU and your Sunday is spent travelling to her house and fixing the problem.

An uneducated end user is an uneducated end user-no matter what the OS platform! Their ability to cope will be equally minimal.

My old drummer's dad inherited his first PC from his computer geek son-in-law. It came with Linux on it (can't remember which distro) and last I heard he was happily surfing the net & sending e-mails, and wouldn't hear of changing it

It's all a matter of what you're used to. People forget that 10 years ago (or whatever) they had to struggle and learn how to double click a mouse in windows!

Absolutely not.

That's one of the big misconceptions that's been actively promoted by certain opponents of the whole free software culture, and it's completely untrue.

You don't lose your copyright just because you ship your product with a GPL product. If you extend or embed a GPL product, you must obey the license terms of the product you extended or embedded. If you distribute GPL software you must follow the terms. But it doesn't poison your licenses, as some people would like you to believe.

And in their eagerness to slag all things Linux they voice their opinions on the internet through ISPs, most of whom use Linux internet servers!
