I've been helping a student set up Tracktion on his new ibook. Installation went fine except for Spike. I'm not one to be negative but that box really was junk - literally. He took it back and they confirmed there was a bad chip inside.
A week later and we're off and running with an m-audio mobile pre. All is going well and tracking is as it should be but we have a new problem, loops.
This particular student already plays guitar, piano, bass and a little drum (really, it's a tiny little thing that makes a wimpy "thwip" when you whack it). Loops are the perfect solution for him. Which brings me to the real problem:
We attempt to import loops but get a screen saying that the files are on a networked disc and we need to copy them to a local directory. This dumbfounds me. The loops are in the same folder as his Tracktion song files. I try dragging from a finder window AND importing using Tracktion's edit window button and we get the same results. Furthermore, I try the SAME thing on my macmini and it all works FINE. Only difference would seem to be the operating system, right? He's using 10.4 and I'm still using 10.3.9 (cause I'm conservative once I get my system running well and I'd rather spend time making music than beta testing for apple.)
Whew.
So, is this at all familiar to anyone else. Is it actually Tracktion or Tiger? Is there ANY good reason why we can't use these free and legal loops?
Oh, I forgot to mention the worst of it. OK, we click copy to local directory and get on with it but nooooo, as soon as we record some new audio, the previously "imported" drum loop is "file missing". Love this: it's still on his machine in the same folder and the finder previews it fine but Tracktion doesn't seem to like it. It sits there, in the project directory, doing nothing.

I've now tried ACID's free loops and a few I've made myself with the same results. I can only figure it has something to do with directories in Tiger. I really don't like it when the OS tries to tell you where to put things. It's enough to make me miss OS 9...sigh.

The more I think about it, the more I think I've probably overlooked something somewhere. I'm sure it's something simple but it sure is frustrating.
I mean, I love this program! Tracktion has been so good for me but we are LONG overdue for some updates with features to smooth over real user issues.
This kind of thing is why I've been using my M-Audio packaged version of Live lite rewired to Tracktion. It has it's own quirks but it's so darn FAST and EASY to put ideas together. The more I use it, the more I realize that I can do things entirely in that program. Why does that upset me? I guess it's the cost!
Honestly, I'm rooting for Tracktion and want it to work out but I'm also saving to buy the full version of Live. I can get the upgrade from lite 4 to full 5 download for 250.00.
It's so obvious that Live was an influence on Tracktion, the integrated user interface, universal property panel, drag & drop everywhere and more. Only now, version 4 and 5 have made Live a full featured app.
I sure wish Tracktion would catch up!!! It's like development fell off the face of the earth this year. (It's my opinion that T2 was mostly finished last year by Jules but the release was delayed by Mackie for marketing reasons including the Spike package. That's probably why some of the features work retroactively with the later versions of T1.)

Sounds vaguely familiar.
I believe there was a fix in version 2.0.1.13 of Tracktion that addressed problems with audio files. There were also problems with early versions of Tiger.

Make sure you're running the latest versions of Tracktion and Tiger, and see if that doesn't fix the problem.
