hehehe, I keep telling myself that the fact that I bought Neil Youngs RECORDS when they were new releases can't possibly mean I'm old. My 57 strat wasn't vintage when I learned to play it either.

SJ_Digriz wrote:Well it all comes back to the fact that good players can sound good playing a piece of crap Asian import $75 guitar without plugging it into an amp. Guys like me can almost sound like a guitar player if I have $10932572139854387 worth of gear and you catch me at a good moment.

However, tone is truly all about taste. I can't listen to modern production for very long, even on songs I like. They just wear me out and without fail the guitar tones irritate me. But then again, I love Bensons ultra dry jazz tone which could offend almost anyone who is used to distortion. So there is no doubt it is all about what you are used to hearing.

I keep hoping that AT52/GR52 will be able to allow us ALL to get what we are after in the comfort of our own little music room. It's getting better, but when I plug my strat into my fullton 69' into a cheezy little fender twin there is NOOOOO comparison coming from my computer no matter how much I twiddle with the dials.
until last month I never paid more the 500 bux for a guitar (I payed 550 last month for an ovation)...I agree. Everyone will probably agree that unless someone gives it too me I would be the last one here buy a Gibson Les Paul or an SG (really any Gibson)...I build or buy guitars...not names. However I think an SG would make for a great canoe paddle...:hihi:

BTW my favorite ax is a hardtail warmoth strat (I use many tunings) with two emg humbuckers, one stock strat single coil (in the middle) and I got the five way wired inside out...it has the "wizard" neck which is ultra thin...for me I have never played anything sweeter...;)

:hihi: so what you're saying is you know why a penny or a nickle was a very important part of most turntables... :hihi:

I think back to first hearing stairway, smoke on the water, all the greats from then, on a clock radio (am) with a three inch speaker...you remember those first digital clocks right? That flipped the number card for the time...;)

I watched Paul Gilbert do a clinic in LA. He picked the cheapest Epiphone (aprox $200) off the rack and proceeded to tear it to shreads without missing a note. He played with speed, comfort and perfect intonation for about 45 minutes. I picked it up afterwords and could barely make a chord.

Dude I heard side one of "The Yes Album" for the first time on a clock radio. The college radio station played complete albums of "NEW" artists when they first came out. It was awesome. It was the best part of Friday nights. Gong, Santana, Mahavishnu Orchestra etc...

And a Sears audio center with built in turntable (aka vinyl grinder) and 8 track was my introduction to STEREO. ack, I'm f**king old.

how shocked were you the first time you plugged into one of thos skinny silvertone heads? (assuming you did) Those things kicked some serious ass, but no one would take people with them serious...if I remember right I believe it was Sunn that actually made them...:)

About 8 tracks, that was so funny, you had to learn the whole program (or at least I did) because there was no rewind, so either you were fast forwarding forever (if you were lucky your deck had a counter, but few 8 tracks did) and hit the stop at the right time or you just played all the songs on the program if you wanted to learn a song by ear...:hihi:

I play guitar, I ordered AT1 recently, with the upgrade to AT2 when it's out, so it'll be interesting to compare it to my VOX Amp.

I have an Ibanez SA, which is very nice for the price. Cost me £280 - probably the most I've ever spent on a guitar, and I'm dead happy with it.

Not really into names, and I can't f**king stand guitar magazines - YOU REALLY DO NEED THIS LATEST AND GREATEST [insert more bullshit hype here] AND PHATEST [insert product here] GO BUY IT!

....

Although the Hendrix pedal looks nice ;)

Hey Sascha,

nice again. I like your playing but I was glad that you first did that tune with the POD. Sounds better to me. The VAMP2 has this hard mid boost that I don't like which shows quite clearly in your recordings. Despite of that (could be equed away) I like the clean and the crunch rhythm sounds. Especially the crunch tone has better sustain, the POD doesn't have enough sustain with these crunchy amps. The VAMP2 lead tone is not so much my thing. I like the lead tone of the POD you used way more. Also the noise of the VAMP2 is clearly audible at one passage.
Again, I like YOUR tone a lot and I think that it sounds better with the POD. But hey, here we go again, with taste ...

Best wishes, FRitz

Squids, here is the presets/tones I would like to see in AT2

-Gary Moore: Still Got The Blues
-Santana: Black Magic Woman

Would that be possible?

Thanks!

-----------------
Sure, why not?
Thanks Squids!

Btw Hink, the presets is mainly for convenience. Just dail the preset and play, instead of having to build it first. Isn't that the whole purpose of a preset? :)

Post

FWIW, on a serious rock recording I wouldn't use either a POD or VAmp. I still have other choices...

Don't mind me I'm an old knob guy
I dont know if you have POD or not, but still this might help you some. One cool thing about POD is the tone transfer online...many, many presets (I do understand the desire for presets) listed by amp and artist...there's many Gary Moores...here's one of the Still got the Blues that I find to be fairly true to the sound though I use a humbucker..I have used this when jamming on some Gary Moore songs, it's not what I used on that clip. As I said that was a sansamp, perhaps oneday for fun I'll redo that with all the tools I have now.

BTW the tone transfer can use two different programs, sound diver and line six edit...sound diver is garbage and is a real hassle. But the line six edit has never given me grief. Both give you more features then are visible on the face of the POD (You can adjust them though from the face).

So here's a screenshot that might help you or squids...:)

Yeah sure,

what would you use from what you own and what would you use if money wouldn't play a role? For a serious rock recording I mean.

Well, I only have a Boogie Mark IV and a Twin, so one of them would have to do...
But I usually don't need any heavy sounds either, just clean stuff, some crunch an a nice lead.

Well, we allready mentioned the Diezels. They're great. I also like Rectifiers. There's some dual channel H&K (name escapes me right now) which has an AWSOME drive channel. And I also like the Framus heads.
Uhm, and then those VHTs...

For a more vintage oriented sound I'd have a look for a Plexi Marshall or reissue (they're really fine!)

Oh, and those Matchless combos are great too. Kinda like a Vox on steroids.

I seriously don't know. If money was no issue I'd get them all and a room to place them all in along with them...

Thanks Hink. I have a PodXT Live borrowed from a friend for evaluation purposes. I will try to see if i can find online some Gary moore sounds. Btw Hink, when you say "I have used this when jamming on some Gary Moore songs, it's not what I used on that clip", what clip are you talking about? I don't see a link.
