Tracktion Software

well i have just started using midi on tracktion now (i really only just got to the place where i feel i have a use for it) and i have soundfont1 and no soundfonts... it looks like i need to download or buy some i guess to use that program. is there any good free Mac OS X soundfonts out there and where can i download them? links would be nice.

i am looking for strings, piano, acoustic types of things, maybe some good organ sounds. drums are cool also. thanks guys!

Soundfonts aren't for mac or pc. The platform doesn't matter. The sf player that loads them and the host that haosts the plyer have to be mac compatible. tracktion is cross platform so you are set.

Try this thread for some soundfont overload! At least you will be getting reccommendations for specific fonts that people like.

so am i right in guessing that the bigger the file is the better the sounds are? i have dial up

oh well its worth some time in waiting but shoot last night i was downloading some VSTI that 5 hours

but it left me with a lot of time to play guitar and learn a new song or two.

Probably, but not necessarily - it might actually contain loads and loads of different crap sounds!

One to look out for is a rather nice free Steinway soundfont. It's so long since I downloaded it that I can't remember from where I got it, but it's probably still out there.

The free steinway is from Warren Trachtman. I like it as well. I used it on this song:

Of course I drenched it in reverb, but the base piano sound is the freebie Warren Trachtman soundfont. The guitars are my strat into a clean fender amp simulation into a compressor, then into Frohmage, where I automated the filter cutoff and resonances, then into bionic delay for some eno-esque atmosphere stuff. All tracked and mixed, 'mastered' in Tracktion.

Some commments about the Trachtman soundfont:

It does not have a very wide stereo field. If you are used to hearing a piano stretch wide from left (bass) to right( treble), then this font is not for you. Rather, it's a very nice font if you want to put the piano out in front of the listener; as if you are hearing a piano in a concert hall (even though it is pretty dry and bereft of reverb).

For another very nicely recorded piano freebie soundfont, that does have a very wide stereo placement, try the Splendid soundfont.

Oops, I see that you are on dialup. You will wait a couple of days to DL some of the fonts I pointed you to. Sorry about that.

you can buy the Trachtman font on CD (with more goodies) for a reasonable price - same link as previous post.

You can also buy the splendid font on CD, again, for not too much money.

If you are short on quality bread-and-butter samples, you might be interested in the downloadeable soundfonts sold by Sonic Implants. Many of them pack an awful lot of punch for their size - especially the drums, basses and guitars. (The Small Ambient 1 is still my all-time favourite acoustic drum set, and it's not even sampled at a full 44.1 kHz!)
