Is FinalMix at all similar to the harmonic exicters that were so popular during the 80's? It seems to part a kind of artificial excitement to my mixes (not saying that's bad) - s

No not really; you are probably hearing compression or expansion of the high frequency band.

If I understand what the aural exciters did, it was not unlike what subharmonic synthesizers are doing on the opposite end of the spectrum.

Subharmonic synthesizers, if I'm not mistaken, add in harmonic content that are fraction multiples of peak frequencies in the lower end of the spectrum. So if you've got a bass note peaking at 200 Hz, you might get 100 Hz, and 50 Hz, and 25 Hz, being synthesized.

It's my understanding that aural exciters do similar things, with multiples of peak frequencies, but you might see an 8kHz tone get doubled to 16 kHz, etc.

Final Mix is doing nothing of the sort - but acting as a combined multi-band dynamics processer with pre and post dynamics EQ going on.

Perhaps I'm all wet on this - it's happened before.
