I often worry about things like this.

Im into the DnB scene and its moving so fast im a little uneasy about my production techniques.

but as you say fcuk it Im gonna do what I wanna do :twisted:

I do some dnb too, and in contrast I have to say I think its massively dated. Everyone is chopping up exactly the same breaks, using the same sounding 'reece' basses, etc, etc, etc

Hopefully the stuff I do myself isn't so dated...

But what isn't dated? Unless you are doing something no one else has done before you are dated yourself I guess...

Everything is dated and unoriginal to a point, its a case of adding your own little twist to keep it sounding fresh. not easy tho.

I don't think the reeses by the likes of Teebee or Phace are dated in the least. Yes, they are reeses, but they are continually pushing the boundaries of what defines a reese.

I've always felt reeses were at the fore-front of technically advanced yet musical, requiring hours of work for a single bar... which is why I love them so much.

Luck would have it I recently made an .mp3 of modern technical reeses for a friend (who is scrub and don't like dnb but says he does...who pretends to like dnb?!??) from my somewhat limited library of dnb:

But seriously, if you're making bass more ninja than the ones in the .mp3, let me hear and I'll retract all my comments And when I say "ninja" I mean extremely technical and musical. Aka, not glitch, because personally I don't find glitchy stuff as musical as it is technical. And how many glitch artists spent 3-5 months on a single tune, like noisia or Teebee... just on the bass alone?

Well i dont listen to a lot of dnb as I just don't buy vinyl and I don't follow the scene religously, but so much stuff i do listen to I recognise the breaks/ hear thats its yet-another-break-chopped and rearranged, with a reecey bass dropping down as per usual etc. I'm not denying there are people doing stuff differently, Noisia are cool etc, but reading forums like DOA, people are just soooo set in their ways it seems a shame.

I don't know if my basslines pass as modern 'reeces' <cringe> or not, but I know because I'm not set in a path by being a dnb 'trainspotter' that I'm not trying to copy whats 'proper' or 'the done thing'.

Anyway its late, I'm tired and I'm beginning to show off. I just get frustrated by people droning on about how dnb should sound balh de blah

I'm not trying to be a dick... I just get all defensive when someone starts dissing teh reese. Mmmm reese!

I don't read the Board on DOA but I have been lurking on the Grid for a long time, and it's possible I don't see what you're saying because I'm in the same thinking as them. I love spending many, many hours on a single bassline, filtering, sampling, chopping... Mmmm reese!

If you listen to that .mp3 and think the reeses still all sound the same, I can't argue with that... I just love that stuff. I just want to make sure you're not hearing sub-par quality reeses and then not liking them. So if you think they're boring after that .mp3, we're pretty much done here and I'm a total asshole... I'm just trying to defend how awesome the reese is

Cause I can totally can agree with you... DnB is just reeses and chopped up breaks. Isn't it beautiful? Well some of it is... It's such a large genre with too many sub-genres. Something for everyone

Oh yeah, Hunter... I probably wouldn't have said anything if I had known early you weren't really that big into DnB. It sounded like you were saying "Yeah, I make hot shit DnB... cept I'm too good to do anything someone else has done before. Too good for a *shudder* reese or too good to *double shudder* chop a break." And it kind of pissed me off But I mean, if you just don't really like DnB my response is pretty redundant.
