Is there any way to replace the preamps in the 1820m? I assume they are hardware not software based. Am I correct?

Don't get thrown off by that only decent remark the 1820m has TFPro preamps. I can't think of anything off hand I would replace them with?? TFPro does killer stuff.

Tom's (not me) Hardware Guide did a in depth review some time ago (I wish these things were dated) The drivers have been upgraded several times sense then and are much better now.

We can go through this together.

My current system is Win98SE with Tracktion 1.6 loaded up and going strong for a year.

In the corner of my office are piling up packages for my new DAW, which will get my copy of T2 loaded onto it as soon as I get the thing built.

The Win98SE / T1.6 machine becomes the kiddies.

My oldest is 11.

I hope to get him working in the T interface soon, but I'll need to buy another midi controller so he can enter his stuff (he does have a few self-made compositions).

Listen to IIRs and Lawnmower - no need to go off buying any soft synths straightaway. Plenty freebies to keep oneself entertained for quite awhile.

I think I'm ok with the e-mu 1820m for now.. checked the forum on hardware mostly positive feedback.

Also: if any of you are going to build a computer ( I do this alot) check out www.sharkeyextreme.com and read the monthly gaming system config. there a great place to find a good collection of components.
