Ah yeah,
I'm happy that a few people weren't turned away by all this poor talk against some hearing aid Behringer etc. blah.
Hi Kingston!
Hi bmanic!
Cool that you stated your valuable opinions about this EQ. Thanx for stating pretty exactly my thoughts about THE EQ!!! It sounds very good.
And to everybody else who isn't sure if they should trust their ears or their CPU meter or are looking for some dog eared eq freaks: bmanic and Kingston are some authorities for this. These are guys I listen to when it comes to eq or compressor questions. This is not slimey but the simple truth. I respect these men for knowing what they are talking about. Nuff said.
So, anybody here who tried the FREE eq? Hey, it's free and great. You always want that, right?
Sleep well, FRitz (off to bed in a minute)

I too would be interested in everyone who's dissing this plug out of hand to at least try it and address the merits of the EQ itself as opposed to the company, which I admit is guilty of a big barrage of hype.
I do think, even though the GUI is bad and they are in for a surprise if they think an EQ (as opposed to a real narrow specialty item like their "hearing enhancer") in the >$1000 price range is going to be well received with a GUI that is transcended by the majority of quality freeware, that the engine inside this EQ is a high performance machine, though I have no basis to establish it as having "no competitors" as someone from the company told me.
If the EQ GUI is like the other two we've seen, though, it will be such a turn-off (as it has been here) that a lot of people will never even try their payware EQ.

Oh boy...looks like this thread is well on the way to topping out at 15 pages.
I understand the squinty response to this company since they seem to have come out of nowhere with incredible claims they don't substantiate very well, their GUI's look like projects from 1st year programming class, and they want a mountain of cash for their as yet largely untested products, but isn't the real test in the listening? It's a free EQ, it isn't infected with anything as far as I can tell---what is there to lose in trying it out?

There's a seriously well thought out algo behind the crap UI and bugs. (it always defaults to extremely weird values and crashes wavelab if I try to play a second instance)
The thing I found most surprising was that I didn't reach out for my 96khz material at all. This sounds incredibly artifact free even on 44.1. The phasing and ringing effects are near absent, or well masked with algo magic.
It's not just the oversampling, there are other oversampling capable plugins that don't sound nearly as good and analytically neutral.
People, for once try not to fool your ears with the crap graphics. Actually LISTEN to the sound. Don't just look at it.

Kingston, when you say artefact free, are you using quality level 5?Kingston wrote:The thing I found most surprising was that I didn't reach out for my 96khz material at all. I agree with this in principle (certainly there are high quality free plugs with no GUI at all of their own), but I think the price point is what has thrown people into a tizzy (it disappoints me but I guess I understand it). The GUI is largely being blasted because of that, I think.Kingston wrote: People, for once try not to fool your ears with the crap graphics. Actually LISTEN to the sound. Don't just look at it.

I think they actually explain pretty well on their site about what makes the high quality level linear function of their EQ work well. It doesn't sound mysterious to me really, though I can't claim to have a technical knowledge to understand the concept thoroughly or anticipate that it would work. The sound is what I'm going on.
The other product line is another matter, though, since they seem to be somewhat vague about the inner workings of that one or how they have established its efficacy in testing.

Yes. Although I have to admit I had a hardtime spotting the difference between the quality modes at first (not knowing what to listen to).Frippertronix wrote:Kingston, when you say artefact free, are you using quality level 5?Kingston wrote:The thing I found most surprising was that I didn't reach out for my 96khz material at all. 1500 is outrageous for a crap looking product like this. I would've preferred a GUIless version.

Also, to the naysayers about that hearing helper plugin thing, you should actually try to READ what they try to say on the site. I found it quite interesting indeed and can well imagine it helping people with ear damage to hear high frequencies a bit better (unless the ear is beyond repair, that is, lost all the sensitive hairs at a specific frequency area) and in a much more balanced way than with an off the shelf 31 band behringer EQ.
Speaking of behringer, if you read the site you'll see WHY they recommend the behringer mixer as the headphone preamp for that 'entry-level' system.
I do however agree with Nuffink that there is a bit of ambulance chansing going on here as I think the company should offer this system at a more reasonable price for people that need it but then again I have no idea how many man hours has gone into developing the EQ algorithm (which IS superb, just download the free plugin and hear for yourself) so maybe the cost is justified?
Now peace everybody and lets discuss this EQ, what it can be used for and most of all, try to motivate one of the lovely freeware/shareware developers to take a listen to this thing and try to 'replicate' it (tons of info at the site how it was made)!
Aleksey, please oh pretty please check out the eq and make us ordinary mortals a 10 band copy with similar quality sound and the famous voxengo price, you'd have my money in a heartbeat!
Cheers!

In the bass range the quality modes make the biggest difference. Boost some bass and then turn the quality step wise from 1 to 5. WOW!!!

In the end will be the word.
