Is Receptor a VSt host?

Sorry for what is probably a very dumb question but after reading through this forum and perusing the MR site, I find I am very confused as to what Receptor is. A s far as I can tell Receptor is a dedicated LInux based host for VST instruments and effects. Correct? Given this is right, then it follws that Receptor is in fact a new host. Where I get lost is that I do not see anything about sequencing and/or midi editing within the Receptor. Since there is much discussion about Uniwire and connection to PC hosts I see that midi sequencing must be external to Receptor's function. Why is this since Receptor already hosts the plugins?

I think it's better to call it a VST player and not a host.... that's my own definition, though.Beardedone wrote:Sorry for what is probably a very dumb question but after reading through this forum and perusing the MR site, I find I am very confused as to what Receptor is. Hmm OK. That's what I thought I was understanding. So it's more of a live performance unit then?

Yes, Receptor is a VST host. A "VST Host" does not have to be a sequencer. The most popular VST Hosts are sequencers, but there are other non-sequencer VST Hosts like Steinberg's V-Stack

Thanks Dan! I am just trying to understand what Receptor is. I believe that one is set up at my local music store (Steve's Music). I am sure I will get a better idea once I have a hands on trial.
Cheers,

Yeah, I suppose it is a "host". I was kinda wondering about that, too. Bias Peak is audio program that can "host" effects but no MIDI. And there's "hosts" without sequencers (V-stack). Then there's sequencers without audio recording ability, like Reason.DanTimis wrote:Yes, Receptor is a VST host. A "VST Host" does not have to be a sequencer. Receptor is a also an effects box, too!
One of the things I was wondering about is if there's anyone using some kind of automation plug-in on their Receptor?
What Receptor isn't is a DAW. I think it's safe to say that.... um, well, it kinda has some of that, too... it has a mixer section.... and there's that UniWire thing...
I just checked the tracking info on mine, it's on the truck for delivery! Woooooo who! Come on FedEx!

"host" and "hosting" are terms that refer to any kind of software that can "run" (the technical term is "host") a particular kind of plug-in. If the plug-in is VST, then you have a VST host. If it is AU, it's an AU host. On the Mac, Live is both a VST host and an AU host. It has nothing to do with what Live does with these plug-ins.
Cubase is many things: a MIDI sequencer, a multi track audio program, and a VST host among others. Receptor is a VST host, a mixer, a live performance tool, but not a sequencer.

I hope receptor is alot better for me than Cubase. Cubase almost made me give up hope on computer-based music making.

The Receptor kept me up all night.
As for the host vs. player thing. I chuckled a bit when I looked at the box and saw Sweetwater's item description tag: VST Player.
My confidence for soft-synths has gone WAY up. Before I was always concerned about over-loading my DAW. Always thinking that adding one more effect might crash it. I was constantly worried that my system would crash at any momment. Like a house of cards. At one point last night, I had 5 synths with 16 different effects running without a hitch! It's like a mega-synth! And my friend was plugged into the thing and using guitar effects. Not a single pop or hesitation! Tonight, I'm loading BFD and RMX.
Maybe a warning label needs to be added to the Receptor: May cause lack of sleep, non-stop grinning and new inspirations.
Cheers!
