Proposed Benchmark testing for T2

I personally am curious to see what combination of hardware gets the best performance out of T2, i.e. soundcard, motherboard, cpu, RAM, etc.

Over at the Pro Tools forum, they have a test called the DaveC test (so named for the creator of the test). It goes like this:
1) Open new PT session
2) Create a new mono audio track
3) Add PT stock effects Compressor, 4B-EQ, Slap delay, medium delay, long delay.
4) Open the System Usage window under the Windows menu item to see the CPU utilization.
5) With your mouse select the newly created track from step 2 above.
6) Press Alt-Shift-D (to duplicate the track)
7) Record enable the track.
8) Repeat step 6 until your CPU goes into the red.
9) If your CPU is in the RED delete the last track created. IF it's still in the red, delete another track until the CPU is back in the green. Click on the CPU meter after every deletion to reset the meter (see warning below). Going into the RED means your getting a -9128 message from PT.
10) Hit RECORD, and record for 60 sec. (it doesn't matter what you record as the file still get's created). If your CPU goes into the RED then delete a track and repeat step 10 until you can record 60 secs. without peaking.
I think we could do something like this for T2, and we could mix in Mac too, just to see what the optimal combination is. Being a computer geek, I think it's really interesting as well.

So I guess the key thing is to use the stock plug-ins, that way everyone would have the same tools to replicate the test. So the question is, which ones?

I'd say to go along with the DaveC, but add in a reverb as well.

It should be easier to do this test too, since T2 is easier to use than PTLE!

What does everyone think?

For instance, I'd be contributing a 1.33Ghz Celeron laptop test, an Athlon 2500+ desktop test, and a desktop Sempron 64 3000+ test (friend's machine). All of these have different chipsets and memory amounts, and also different HD types and speeds.

I would like to see this done as well..just 2 weeks ago I was buying a new processor/mobo, but there are no such test in place out there...

Post

I think the filters I'll use will be compressor, EQ, reverb, delay, and chorus. I'll test my desktop and laptop, probably tonight or tomorrow morning, and post the results.

Oh, and I'll be recording at 24/44.1khz.

BTW, what sort of equipment are you running? It'd be cool to see what you come up with, with presumably more modern gear than my own.

well for now Im not recording with anything :(
I had a pretty much complete hardware replacement 2 weeks ago. Ive replaced PSU MOBO/CPU RAM HDD. My only hitch now is the copy of XPpro that I have is an upgrade copy. I remember leaving my windows 98 CD at home when I moved out, and after that the box was thrown away. Ive been trying to find a copy for almost 2 weeks now...grrrr

If anybody knows how I can get around this, please let me know...but I think until I have a 98 CD, NO COMPUTER FOR JEFF!

and I had to go budget...i got a sempron 3000+ with a decent mobo, 512 RAM and 40 gig HDD

Alright, here goes. Work computer:

Athlon 64 3000+
512MB DDR
40gig SATA, both system and audio
ATI Radeon Xpress 200 chipset
Stock onboard soundcard

Test done at 24/44.1Khz, with compressor, reverb, 4 band EQ, delay, and chorus on each track, recorded base track for 60 seconds, then copied it to each track. On this machine I got 35 tracks playing back, before the cpu meter went red.

My home desktop:

Athlon XP 2500+
1024MB DDR
80gig SATA system, 80gig EIDE audio
Via KT600 chipset
Echo Mia soundcard

Only 14 tracks before cpu red.

Good idea polaris but maybe we should pre-set the effects settings. I suppose different reverb settings will results in different CPU load and so on. A small, one track Tracktion archive would be a good start for comparable results. What do you think?

That's a great idea, I didn't think of that. I can do one later, and post it to my website, if that'll work for you guys.

Post

Great , just put a short audio recording in there, one or two bars and compress it with ogg to keep the size as small as possible.

Cheers

I'm loving this idea...till I find out how pitiful my CPU is! ;)

yeah, I was a bit disappointed with mine, and it really shows the strengths of the A64 chips over the older A-XP architecture. I think it's the FSB that's killing me at home, in comparison to my work computer, which I was quite impressed with.

Post

Yes, my FSB will demolish me...but hey, then I have a good rationale for upgrading...so post that test archive!! :)

Here's a you send it link. However, I couldn't do an archive, just the track edit and wav

Where's the link?

This all you should need anyway, since the edit contains the plug-in data.
