Using auto-detect to set time adjust for inputs

I just viewed Subz's (djsubject's) video on getting started in Tracktion (great little video by the way), and it inspired me to try to set the "time adjust" parameter with auto-detect, but I can't seem to get it to work with my Audiophile 2496 card. Is it worth doing? What does this really do?

auto detect is so any recorded audio is PERFICTLY in time with the rest of the track,

some cards are 1ms out & some cheaper cards can be a hell of alot more

if you have a input that records everything you here then you should be able to use auto detect on that input & copy the number to all other inputs

And in order to check that input (that records everything I hear), I need to loop it by having not only the input (which, of course, I would already have), but also set up an output the goes out of my audiophile 2496 and into the device I'm using to record? (which in my case is an Art DI/O). Or am I just making this all too confusing!

Also, when I use the Audiophile's mixer settings, I get a -1.15 ms. I take it that negative numbers make sense, or is that just a fluke of the audiophile's mixer settings?

Okay, I just looped to my Art DI/O and got 0.40 ms adjust.

Hmmm...well, I'll use that and then just quit worrying about this.
