Hmmm...I can't open the edit (it said: "Can't find the source file for this edit."), so from the projects window, I clicked "import material" => "import all files in a directory" and this gave me a "trackcounttest" edit that then had a short (6 sec?) audio file and all the VST's lined up for me.

Did I do this right?

Yeah. Get rid of that audio clip, then re-record something on that track, for 60 seconds.

Then select all plug-ins, and copy them to the next track. Then record on that track, or simple copy the first one.

Keep doing that until you reach the red cpu indicator. Then post all your hardware data, such as cpu, ram, chipset, hard drive, and sound card.

Cool...got it... thanks for your patience!

Here are my results:

20 tracks. [EDIT: Wrong! When I did the test right, I only got 8 tracks!]

Using this desktop [EDIT: 24 bit, 44,100 sample rate]

Celeron 1.2 GHz
640MB Ram (don't know the kind)
80gig WesternDigital EIDE HD for system,
80gig Hitachi/IBM EIDE audio
VIA Apollo Pro133T chipset
Audiophile 2496 soundcard

Not too bad. [EDIT: so I wish! ]

Hmm... mine isn't doing that good

11 tracks occasionally hit red, 12 hit red consistantly

ABIT IS7 Mobo with 2.4ghz P4, I think this is i865 chipset, hyperthreading on
800 FSB
1 G RAM DDR400
Nvidia dual head video
Maudio Firewire410 with only outs 1+2 enabled
Maxtor 80g 7200 drive EIDE audio and seperate 80G for system
WinXP pro with tweaks for audio as discussed here and elsewhere

Post

Interesting side notes - Turning hyperthreading off allowed one more track

Turning SCROLL off allowed 1 more track

Messing with latency did not see to have much effect (normally run 256 samples - 1024 did not seem to change things)

Bear,

That's crazy. Your system should be smoking mine. Did I do somethng wrong? Did you?

Hmmm....and yes, I was doing 20 tracks (+ recording on a 21st) with no redlighting.

I will add that I have tweaked the dickens out of my system, though according the the BlackViper notes I used, it could be tweaked further.

Also, at 20 tracks, the response was like molasses! ;)

My secret! :)

Just kiddun...

Here's what I did (though I may have done more, in a piecemeal fashion that I can't recall..but the following are definte):
1.) Did a clean install of XP
2.) Followed simple instructions at this site: http://www.musicxp.net/tuning_tips.php
3.) Followed blackviper's "power user" settings to turn off services (acquired from his site, which is down, but I have a word document listing these which is available here: http://www.zupload.com/download.php?fil ... path=28959)
4.) Picked and chose a few additional tweaks from this site (I think): http://www.espace-cubase.org/anglais/pa ... =flmatosxp
5.) Set temp. folder as a folder in audio HD. (Don't know that this really matters for this test.)

That's a start.

This is likely standard fare for the computer savvy, but for me it's "tweaking the dickens" out of XP! :hihi:

FoxV - I imported project as described above. Then I ripped a track off of a CD into a .wav and copied it to 15 tracks (so these were stereo tracks at 44.1k 16 bit). Then I cut and pasted the filters from track 1 (from the original project - chain of Vol,EQ,Reverb,Delay,Chorus,Compessor) and pasted into each track and then hit play....

I can't imagine that I did anything different from you???? I am very dissapointed in these results, as you say my machine should smoke yours.....

Maybe I will set up the same file on my lappy and see what it does (1.8g centrino with 512m RAM)

I have done pretty much all the same XP tweaks you describe....

Post

Hmmm - I trackarched the above to my laptop and it will only do 6 tracks.....

Post

bear, are you seeing the ! in the CPU meter on your lappy?
perception: the stuff reality is made of.

Post

bear,
it looks like you did what I did...though I recorded nothingness...I thought I read that that didn't matter...hmmm, let us check! ....

ooo.....yup, it matters!!!!!! I could only do 8 tracks!!!!!!!

Post

@mandolarian - no, I did not see the ! the cpu box just turned red. I think it is just the raw processing to run so many instances of the filters...

@FoxV and Polaris20 - it appears to do a apples to apples we all need the same audio file also... anyone want to post a track? I don't have any way to....

I do want to make it clear that this testing is in no way an attempt to put down Tracktion.

I write DSP firmware for a living, and I often test my own stuff to the point that it breaks. This is only an attempt to try and see what limitations exist and how the software reacts when pushed to the limits.... The only way to compare different hardware setups is to push the software to the point that it breaks. All software and hardware will break eventually if pushed hard enough.....The geek in me just wants to know where....

Putting 6 filters per track with lots of computational requirements and still being able to run 10 to 20 tracks along with a GUI and harddrive access at 44k sample speed is amazing to me, this level of performance would have cost 100k$ or more just a few years ago.....

In real life situations the performance of Tracktion is certainly more than adequate for anything I've needed to do....

Post

That's odd; it shouldn't matter what you're recording, even if it's empty space, because as far as the computer's concerned, it's sampling at 44.1, with a bandwidth of 24bits.

Something about this test ain't right. I gotta think.
