My guess is that the reason we can't drag to a MIDI clip is because of the signal flow. There is not yet any sound coming out of a MIDI track until it gets past the MIDI clip and into the synth or sampler.
HOWEVER, if for some reason you could do it, that would be great, since then you could have a single track change between synths that it controls as the track goes on, and without any automation. Maybe doing this would behind the scenes automatically automate the turning on and off of each track.
Does this make any sense to anyone? It's hard to explain. Basically, when you drag a synth to a clip, it still inserts that synth right after the volume filter by default, but automatically shuts on and off the synth for that clip. Like I said, "behind the scenes" automation.

Incidentally, Julian did a bit of stuff for DAR (Digital Audio Research) in their time too - a great workstation, sadly underrated, but it'll become a design classic in 10 years, mark my words.
And yes, it was naturally an inspiration when it came to designing Tracktion's interface and architecture.

oh... and the other thing I would rather like to see would be some method of saving a library of midi phrases (with or without synth/effects) that could be inserted into an edit without changing screens (right click pulldown?). I envision this something like an arp, and the phrases would be like arp patterns
when one dropped a phrase into a track, it would auto adjust to timing. I woud like to be able to just drag the length to fit.

Imagine:
You have an effect, instrument, or group of effects in your "filters" area. When an clip is encountered, they "pop into existence" in your filter area. Then when the cursor goes past the clip, they magically disappear.
That's how I imagine per-clip audio FX working. They just "pop up" in the first part of the normal filter section as effected clips are encountered, but of course they're not visually represented that way-- they just remain superimposed on the clip itself. (which is a good thing!)
So, if indeed that's the way it works (and I can't imagine any other way, really), there's no reason why MIDI can't operate like this? The only limitations would be on putting plug-ins that don't properly pass audio and/or MIDI information, but that's really on the plug-in developers and the end-user, not on RMS/Mackie, IMO.
So... let's see per-clip filters on all clips! You know you want it....
