Eddie Vedder? I Have to disagree on that one. I think he thinks much better and on key on CD than in real life. I never been to a live PJ concert, but I saw a few on TV.

Ashlee Simpson sounds just like her CD when she sings live.

Easy...

Bono.
Shane Mc Gowan.

... Both GODS IMO and both amazing live singers!

whoever said layne Staley - yup, & thom yorke - yup.
I'd add Chris Cornell (Soundgarden & Audioslave) - class rock vocalist.
I think Maynard James Keenan (Tool, A Perfect Circle) can be excellent live also, very expressive.

james0tucson, did you do an A/B comparison? ;)

siouxsie sioux.
strange but trioux :D

she sounded great every time i saw them play.
considering how she sounds on some of the tracks on Juju, i was pleasantly surprised.

then again, some flat notes were clearly a stylistic desicion in their recorded work.

Oh, Dave Collings; when he performed with Numb, it was mind blowing.
really hard core effects fest, it's true, but there was just this power to it, and the sound was incredible; it was disturbing. I loved it.

has someone already mentioned DCD? Lisa Gerard sounds like what angels, if they existed, would sound like. And brendan fraser too. Severance made me want to weep it was so good.

Hovmod wrote:You're wrong about Whitney Houston. I was a stage hand when she played Oslo in 1992 or so, (when that awful always love you song was number one everywhere), and she could NOT sing. Period. I was thinking "all right, this is going to be horrible, but at least she can sing", but I was wrong. She couldn't. It was embarrassing. I blushed on her behalf. And I hated her in the first place.

Sting sings good live. And Emma Kirkby.
LOL.

Maynard from Tool comes to mind.

Jon Spencer.

well, that was a long time ago, like about 13 years...
Blues explosion was opening for cop shoot cop, at the town pump in vancouver. I loved it. I didn't even like rock music at the time, and they just blew me away.
He can really belt out the tunes.

Cop shoot cop were excellent too: i bought a cd on the strength of their performance, and it turned out the other way round: the rocked live, and i didn't like the cd.

Seconded on Bowie. The man's voice touches new ground during live performance.

Edwin Starr (RIP) still the most darned souldful voice I ever heard live.

Finally, Whitney. Hovmod:- When you saw her she must have hit the stage post a smoking session with Bobby Brown because I have also seen this lady live and she was technically magnificent. (To the detriment of the 'soul' imho, but either way, to say she cannot sing is just ridiculous)
