sarah mcglaughlin (sic?) has NEVER needed autotune. I remember over a decade ago when she had just released her first album, i saw her on the David Letterman show; she was so nervous that you could hear an ever so slight quiver, but despite a difficult piece every single note was pitch perfect or close to. I am not a huge fan of her music, but there can be no doubt of her amazing talent and ability.
people are so cynical, they're hearing autotune where there is none

I blame the corporate record companies for watering down pop music to such a disgusting and artless level that we just assume people have no talent.

i have never seen her live, or swans even sadder for me; but if she or micheal gira ever come to western canada i am so there, i don't care who i have to kill.

absolute favourite musicians ever.

She gave an interview a few years back where she was asked what the criteria was to be put on the Lilith Fair tour. Her answer: "No Autotune".

The fact that she languishes in relative poverty and gets almost no press is a true tragedy. She has an interview in the October issue of Wire that I'm trying to get my grubby mitts on. The album with Neurosis, the Swans, and her solo work is expansive and impressive.

Really?! I wonder how can artists know about Autotune since most of the time they are oblivious to what record producers do with their voices on studio sessions.

Is "autotune" now a common term as "photoshop"?

Yes.

I regularly hear radio presenters referring to 'Autotune' (usually with a scathing attitude). 'Pro-Tools' is similarly well-known by people outside the music biz.

Justin Sullivan of New Model Army - an incredible showman and fantastic songwriter to boot - saw him last spring on a "solo' tour, just him and a 12 string, and a small accompanying band. All the NMA live albums are absolutely f**king CHARGED too.

Tina Arena....

Little-known Ozzie girl who has just THE most amazing voice and is even better live.

She sang at some music award presentation years ago... she was virtually unknown (still is I guess) but she was fantastic. The cameras were panning to the star-studded audience and the likes of Celine Dion ("hey - why the long face Celine?"

) were looking very worried.

Sadly, Tina went a bit bland (and, I think, ended up in musicals

). Great voice though who could have gone on to great things (a looker too!).

Eva Cassidy - never saw her live (as such... just TV) but she sounded great on record and on the occasions I saw her performing live on TV. Very sad to lose her... we were robbed of a great talent.

Tony Hadley (ex-Spandau Ballet) - saw him live and he was exactly the same as on record.

Pete Cox (Go West) - terrific vocalist live and on record. And a real singing pro!

A friend once worked with him... no airs and graces, just went in and nailed a vocal in one take then rewound and did all the harmonies in one take, accurately double tracking the warbles and slurs and performance nuances from the orginal. My mate said it was the quickest, best vocal session he ever recorded in his career - so quick and easy and effortless.

Peter Gabriel - not a great singer but pretty much the same live as on record (but with the added excitement of the 'event' when seeing him live be it with Genesis or solo - saw him on many occasions in both guises).

Nik Kershaw was (is?) supposed to be a damned good live singer too (even though he is a guitarist/songwriter by trade and a reluctant singer).

Bob Dylan and Mick Jagger - equally dreadful on record and live

I could go on!!!

Agreed about Sarah McLachlan - nice woman too. If it's any consolation, she's getting a fair bit or airplay here in the UK on BBC Radio 2.

FWIW I can't stand slipknot, played in a band that covered them, and it sucked. The most mind-numbingly dull thing I've ever had to learn. I wouldn't say corey taylor (slipknot) live compares to the albums, but it's still pretty damn impressive that he can (mostly) keep up to the "songs"

I went to her website and sampled some of her videos, she is not bad, she has a somehow nasal voice though. And she is not pitch perfect on some videos. For instance in this video clip http://www.tinaarena.com/media/Tina_IWKWLI_2.mov she goes off pitch sometimes.

I still cannot beleive that Sarah McLachlan does not use autotune. I always assumed that she was...She found a new fan, that is for sure

Artists who sing as good ( or better!) live!!
