Have you ever met or heard of any serious musician who was successful, that didn't buy lots of yummy new toys when the royalty checques came through?
Gear lust and why not

The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.

Gear 'lust'? Hell, I know a bonafide 100% 'Gear Slut'! The guy goes through Ebay daily like Dog: The Bounty Hunter and puts up a most wanted list at the end of the day. And he always 'gets his man'... We're talking Yamaha CS's DX's, EX's, Oberheims, Rhodes, you name it... What's even worse, the guy's buddies with Dave Smith as well - so he's got the Evolvers, Poly Evolvers, SCI stuff... Oh yeah, and the kicker - he won a Yamaha Motif8 synth to boot!
I don't know how a sickness like that starts - and can't imagine the impact should it ever end?
I used to like 'little toys' - Casio's, Bontempi's, Radio Shack... And they add up after awhile. But this big ass stuff on a monthly basis - when all the software is out there... That's nuts!
(Yeah, but I can't help but love the guy still... Just so I can be a benificiary in his will hopefully.

I had gear lust at one stage. I even set up a small studio and now I am paying for it literally.
I still got most of my gear, including some early analogues.
Because of the income my list of things that I wish to buy is small.

I could have been sucked into the gear thing, but luckily, the free vst world intervened.
Now I have 1000's of free soft-synths.
Gear lust lite.

well there is willie nelson. he kept the same old guitar and spent all the money on weed.
Yeah well....he smoked that much weed, he probably couldn't hear that his crappy old guitar had rust all over its strings.
Wouldn't you rather be stoned and play around on shiney new toys?

Brian Eno. He's got yummy toys, but he's very sparse and selective about it. I think his philosophy on gear is pretty pragmatic: Know the gear you have very deeply before you buy new stuff.kritikon wrote:...Have you ever met or heard of any serious musician who was successful, that didn't buy lots of yummy new toys when the royalty checques came through?...
But, of course, that doesn't stop me from suffering from incredible gear lust.

thanks for the input:
I'm trying to force myself to really think about it. here's the result (1 - most important...):
1) the musician
buying more gear makes me forget about making myself a better musician
2) the instrument
got that covered but always want more
3) room and mic
4) preamp
5) audio card
6) recording sw and what you do with it

Then there's that saying....
"It's a poor musician who blames their instrument"
Stupid Bontempi organ! Why couldn't you be a Hammond? I could be just like Keith Emerson then! Amputee or not, I could've been a somebody!
But then I think it's also the design, technology, and just craftsman ship that draws us Tim Allen like 'Hardware Men' to this stuff... "Stainless Steel Look!... Uuuuuugh? "7 LCD Color Screen!.... Arr-arr-arr-arr! Veneered wood grain sides! Owf-Owf-Owf!... 40GB Pre-installed Hard Drive! AAAAAAAAAOOOOOOWWWGAAA!"
A real MANLY synth there boys! Can't wait to look at the new Kurzwe... Well would you look at that, my ties caught in the Pitch Bend wheel!....We'll be right back.

if any of us were real composers, we'd write music with nothing but a peice of paper and a pen. how many of those guys can you think of? old upright pianos dont count as gear, btw ^_^
