if u need a Bass Guitar sound... what do u use? Do u use a soundfont? I have been looking for a good bass guitar SF2/sampleset on the internet.. do u know of anything i could download? I do intend on buying the Manystation eventually.. but now i do not have extra $$$. thanks.. and sorry if this post was off-topic
I have some really good bass guitar sounds i got with Orion, some fretless bass, an Ovation plus some other stuff, Fender Jazz and an upright and double bass.

If i was you, i'd wait for Many Guitar, that should cover all your needs (Manystation has some excellent guitars too tho)

I dont really use 'real world' sounds much tho...

I have two files that they used to give away free. splendid_72.sfpack and splendid_136.sfpack. I never knew that Akai gave them away...hell I never even messed with these ones. $15 isnt bad though for it if you are really going to use it.

Thanks alot guys
You mean the 128mb SF2 I guess? It may be something like 72 meg when compressed, but it's 128mb in SF2 form.
There once was (for a short short time though) a 256 mb version on the SoundCreation site...

Gladly, I had the time to pick it!

If you search for a good piano, there are a couple big on Audioshots site (www.audioshots.com)

I just download this download from Sound Creations. Yesterday I downloaded the free SFZ by rgc:audio. I was able to use it to play a .wav file. But I still haven't figured out how to use it with soundfont samples since I'm so new with this.

Anyways, Sound Creations says to uncompress the Splendid Grand soundfont using SFPack, which I also downloaded. Since the company that put out SFPack no longer exists, I really don't have a clue how to do this. I also read there are other software solutions similar to SFPack.

I would love to be able to do all the steps it takes to get this Splendid Grand soundfont working in sfz. I'm thinking that having a good soundfont player would be a cool thing. If anyone has any pointers or suggestions, it would be much appreciated.

Hey

Download SFPack HERE

Extract the zip file to your program files folder (e.g. C:/Program Files/SFPACK). No installation is required.

Launch the program using sfpack.exe. After the first run it will create a Start Menu shortcut and will add suitable options when right clicking soundfonts or sfpack files.

Now you can expand the sfpack file: either open the program and drag the files or double click the file after the first run.

You will now have a .sf2 file.

Load sfz in your favorite VST host (or run it as standalone) and load the sf2 file by either browsing (clicking the 'file' field) or by dragging the file to sf2 interface

Play.

Enjoy.

Thanks for your great tips! I'm now sittin' here playing a splendid grand. And it sure sounds good. Great bass and nice even quality across the whole piano range. To think yesterday I was downloading sfz and tonight I have a free grand piano...well the internet and kvraudio are great resources.

Now, if I could only find a great real string ensemble soundfont sample!

Thanks again.....

While we're more or less on the subject, wasn't there a 512 MB version as well?

You should register at the Audioshots community. A great place to post your music, learn techniques and - most pertinent to this topic - there is lots of excellent sample packs and soundfonts over there. There's a few really good quality grands over there as well, which you could probably convert to SF2 with Chicken Systems' translator free.

yep, the maestro translates 'ok' useing the chicken system, also tried the V-Sampler demo, but I couldnt get the other patches (other then the main piano) to work, and couldnt get the pedal noise at patch to actually have the pedal sounds  no big loss tho, pretty good piano, pretty thin sound tho, missing alot mid/low end.

Yes - like car boot sales are great resources buying knocked off and illegal CDs, videos, DVDs, etc.!

try checking this site with a search for "strings"... this site is really neat, man.

Reprznt,

Go to the RGCAudio forum and look for the sticky (permanent) thread near the top that lists recommended soundfonts. The thread is ten pages long, been around awhile, so no doubt some of the links are dead, but there's still enough there to keep you very busy. :)

You can find a Kontakt/EXS version of my Musicman bass sampled here:
http://sascha.presetbank.com/
Nothing special but sits fine in a mix. If you use Kontakt, better don't bother with the version using release samples.
The patches should be translatable to SF2 more or less easily, using one of the common conversion programs.

Regarding the Splendid Grand: I don't think it's all that special. For my taste it lacks of high end definition. Not exactly justifying the large size IMO. Working quite well for the occasional jazzy ballad though.
