mackie should get in to totally integrated systems. i trust the mackie brand, but it all gets diluted when you have to integrate with other peoples kit.Dear Mackie, start selling the pc to do all this on too. I dunno about laptops and all that power, though. I still think it's the domain of desktop computing for now.

did you try putting in asio direct mode? did you try raising the latency?

I found getting a PCMCIA USB card (£24) improved my US122 performance to almost no drop outs & crackles from chronic levels. I think it is laptop specific (avoid Compaq EVO models)

I've got an Evo N600c and I've been very surprised at what I'm getting out of it. If I keep it out of the dock, I get basically no pops at very low or low latency on my m-audio omni studio and transit. I've got a us-122, but it never got as low in terms of latency as the other gear. I was put off a little by the mention of crosstalk and the latency is just too high for me for playing guitar.

The echo indigo IO does very well, but seems to burn more CPU cycles than the USB devices.

The "before Carly" Evo stuff is good gear in terms of stability and reliability. Not the fastest on the block anymore, of course.

I certainly wouldn't trust the Presario, Pavilion, and Inspirons any more than my n600c without seeing some evidence to suggest they weren't junk.

Evo N610c - I think these have an "early" USB2 implementation and are inherently dodgy - another person on here had exactly the same issues.
