Ubersynth vs one trick ponies

I once wanted only übersynths because I didn't want to miss ANY features. Lately I'm more interested in character. So I don't care anymore if a certain synth is a one or 3 trick pony if it sounds great it's great. If it's limited, so what? I've got more excellent choices available then I use most of the time.
Lately I'm using a new yet to be released übersynth with rich and versatile sound. Just the way I want it: Great sound. Big Character.

I know this sounds weak - But presets often buy me. I have speant large $ on many Übersynths, as well as samplers like Sampletank 2. I also use tons of one-trick-ponies (Which seems to be the popular term.)

Your arsenal is your arsenal. Some things can do things that other things can't (A bit redundant, no?). I like having options available to me. I occasionaly tweak a few knobs, but I am mostly a preset user. Again, it all boils down to what your composistional process is. The steps you take to approch each song.

I usualy write down the tune I hear in my head on notation paper, or jot down an idea I have in notepad. From there, I proceed to expirment with every plugin, big or small untill I hit the nail on the head per say.

But then again, not everyone has $ to spend on plugins. Some get quite expensive. I was living on Ramen and P&J the last time I decided to lay down the bread for some new synth.

if using presets lets you make the music you want faster and better, then go for it! We're blessed to live in a time and age with a wonderful supply of quality freeware.

Synths are like women

so you have an uberwoman at home and a few one trick fillies dotted around?

i've found myself moving right away from the uber-synth type of instrument, give me a few decent (soundwise) synths like asynth, synth1, polyibit etc. and use effects and automation if I want any extra frills.

i guess it comes down to your style too, if you're making minimal electronica then some big throbbing, evolving saw patch isn't a priority for you.
