Well, anything goes really. Using synth tones and heavily ring/cross-modulated tones seems to yield interesting (to me at least) results. Spirit Canyon has some very cool CDs out that are made for convolution abuse. There are some cool impulse responses made by a guy named Fokke van Saane that are of odd real world spaces like buckets, vacuum cleaners and small radio speakers. Sometimes sound FX and enviromental sounds can make for interesting convolution sources. Just throw anything at it. For me it's endlessly fascinating because the results are usually pretty surprising.

Lately I've really gotten into using impulse responses of small radio speakers to create fragile little sounds to add into the mix. It really helps to add some contrast to the rest of my musical style which often times can get pretty dense and rich. The Fokke van Saane stuff is ideal for this.

The other thing that I'm big on, with samples in general, is pitch shifting them down an octave or 2... or 3... or 4... or 5...

I've bought a couple of the Spirit Canyon CDs: they really are packed with material, too. I'm still getting the hang of this method of mangling sounds, but so far, I seem to get quite satisfactory results with the {free!!} SIR_1010 convo plug-in. There are fancy products that have more comprehensive features, but they exceed my sophistication level right now...

I'll try the van Saanes...

If you're going to mangle, mangle like you mean it!
ACID is handy in this respect with simple beat loops at (say) 120-140bpm. Drag them down to 40-50bpm and you've got something way cool, warped almost beyond recognition...And in general, it's amazing what a 2-octave drop will do to any damned thing...

Could be he's got legit copies of Acid and Soundforge but not of other software - hence he doesn't mention the rest in an interview :) Surely he must be using the Native instruments stuff like Reaktor??? It is practically made for his type of music!

You can (kind of) get around this by using BUS tracks. Say I wanted a couple of softsynths to share the same delay - I create a new BUS track and add the delay to it. Then I set the outputs of both softsynths to the same BUS track.

It's a fairly flexible system, and you can even chain one BUS into another.

The main short coming of this technique however is that you can't vary the send levels for each instrument.

I bet he chops up his audio by hand in SF. Tedious, time consuming, but very rewarding when you get it right.
