Searched for this topic to find some good names as well, starting at the top, I'm liking this Ochre pretty well so far.

I'll add a few
Melodic side of IDM:
Lusine
Esem - serial human
Bola - soup or fyuti
Mouse on Mars - audiotacker
Boards of Canada - Music has the rights... and Beautiful Place

Glitchy(er) side of IDM:
Phoenecia - Brownout
Autechre - anything from about 93-96 or so, especially Tri Repeatea

I like alot of the other stuff mentioned as well like Aphex, Arovane, some Plaid, Vibert. Definitely check out Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works 1 and Polygon Window. They may be a bit dated, but they define the genre pretty well imo. (Which unfortunately brings up the arguement that IDM is just chasing that Richard James sound)

Not sure if Amon Tobin counts as IDM, but he is one of my favorite artists (from any genre) hands down.

Edit: also, not to be funny but check out some of the later Radiohead stuff, start with Kid A (Though I think their best album may be OK Computer)

Sorry mate, i only like stupid dance music. :(

but its all good :)

can anyone clarify for me if Ochre used to be an active member of this forum (or still is)? his stuff is sounding great!

i wonder if we can throw RJD2 into this mix even though it's more hiphop-y same with Dj Shadow

oh and Harmonic 33, Pest, Skalpel, Jamie Lidell

i think someone like myself has a loose definition of what IDM is. I agree the intelligent prefix is so nutty

Post

Try arovane, MACHINEDRUM, and syndrone!!!

Genjini (glitchy)
Matmos (glitchy)
Phonem (glitchy)
Psilodump (glitchy)
Trancenden (more chilled out, reminds me of Amon Tobin and/or DJ Shadow)

Has anyone mentioned Secret Frequency Crew yet? Their 'Forest of Echo Down' was the best thing I've heard in the Merck / Schematic style of IDM in quite a while.

Can anyone refer me to some good beat heavy music with interesting drones and orcestrated melodies/harmony?
:help:
