... but I'm getting a new computer. Once the new one is delivered, I'm going to give Tracktion one more go.
Do some of you who are working flawlessly mind listing your PC specs? Don't worry about hard drives, or even video cards (I've got 2 spares here now) - just MOBO/CPU combinations.
Thanks in advance!

Me too. I want to know the flawless combo, so I can upgrade too. But, please state your video card and shoe size and all the seemingly insignificant trivia. The details is where something lurks...

Nah, I'm getting a new computer anyway - it's a time issue, and time is money. If Tracktion doesn't work, I'll get Cubase - let the flaming begin!
Seriously, though - can you guys let me know what your combo is?
Cheers,

I'm increasingly convinced that this is not true (or at least in the sense that you mean).mandolarian wrote:The details is where something lurks...
Clearly there has to be a reason why T works flawlessly for some people, and is hopelessly sluggish for others, but (within reason) hardware is not the answer AFAICT.
I've seen numerous cases of near identical setups behaving differently, some people report problems with ATI cards, some with nVidia.
My personal feeling is that it is something to do with useage habits, or configuration specifics (video card/audio card conflicts etc). It may even be the case that differing video card driver/motherboard driver/directx versions are behind it. Blindy swapping out hardware seems like a mugs game to me though.

I can understand what you're saying, Lunch, but in your case, you don't make money with your setup, whereas my setup is PIVOTAL to my business - which is why I don't mind spending the money for a stable system.
I was experiencing minor problems before trying T2 anyway, so it's time to upgrade!

I agree, valley, but I'm playing a percentages game here - chances are, if what you guys are using works, it'll work for me, and if not, my brother-in-law (who's my computer tech) can swap it for something else, anyway.

For a few years, I've been using a LanParty 875 motherboard (Intel chipset) with a Pentium 4. While it was geared toward gamers, it's been very stable with audio apps, and it has extra IDE channels that can be used as a RAID or for additional drives, and I'm using SATA for the main drives. I bought a matched pair of ram to go with it. I usually use Matrox video boards. The site is http://www.dfi.com.tw/Product/xx_produc ... CT_ID=1880

well boogoloo, hwo about trying things the other way around:
post information on a typicaly edit you may be working on when the system becomes too slow/unstable/whatever to work.
How many audio tracks? How many plugins. What latencies, samplerates, etc? Do you do a lot of audio clip splitting. Do you use a lot of MIDI. How much automation, how many tempo changes, etc...
Perhaps if we were all working in the same way on music we'd all be seeing the same problems, and then perhaps they could get fixed.

ANSWER THE QUESTION, DAMMIT!
I've only tried one thing so far in Tracktion, and it's really the most vital for me - quite a few (30-70) audio tracks. No midi (although I'd be using VSTs if I could get the audio to run), no fx (although I'd be adding them if I could get the audio to run), no slicing (or nothing major), no automation, no tempo changes, sample rate could be anything from 44.1 and 16 bit to 96 and 24 bit, latency is 512 ms.

P.S. Can you tell me your motherboard and cpu combination, just for kicks...?

AMD3200-64
Chaintech MOBO (not the best but very quiet, and it was the only PCI-E board that still had a useful complement of PCI slots)
1GB Corsair RAM
2xWD Caviar HDDs 40GB
Gigabyte nv5200 video card (purely because it is passively cooled).
M-Audio Audiophile 2496 PCI card.
Intel Pro 10/100 network card (8 years old)
Old adaptec SCSI card from the days when I still used my sampler.
So next question: were those tracks stereo? I don't typically use that many audio tracks, being more of a VSTi man. I also find that when I start splitting audio clips, Ts performance goes to hell quickly. Usually I would tend to top out at around 20 tracks of 44.1k 32bit stereo (so I guess 80 tracks by the standard definition of 'track').
