Why does Tracktion do a full VST scan on starting?

Yet the question remains, WHY does T scan the plugs at startup?
because it's been instructed to (either on purpose or because of a bug). that's the only reason any program does anything.

and so it shall be... until cyberdyne systems gets their way. :o :-o

Tracktion's scan is pretty much an in depth scan. It will try to figure out if the dll is a valid vst, and rule out any buggy ones for the most part. Granted, it's not perfect at catching the buggy ones... but it's pretty good at catching plugs that are at the most basic level problematic and not conforming to the spec. EXT will make any dll it finds available (you can even rename a textfile to *.dll, and it'll show up). The scan is ultra fast, but performs no integrity tests... and when it hits something really strange... it might just go poof when you load it, while tracktion will usually place it in the disabled list.. or might graciously let you remove the filter if something strange happens. Either way, I think in depth scans are good.. but a "fast scan" option for experienced users would be a nice bonus.

What would be really nice is to be able to remove plugs one by one from the "disabled list" (for a second chance) without the need to rescan everything from scratch.

Good call!

i only used the FL demo for a while, but it scans my vst folder in about 2 seconds if I have added something new. Tracktion takes 5 minutes.

What's the downside to what FL does? If it is just an occassional freeze or crash I think it is a fair trade-off. I dread adding new things to my vst folder.

If Tracktion maintained a list of scanned plugs it could possibly bypass previously scanned ones and only scan for new ones (Like it says it will do).

i believe the difference is that something like Tracktion does a 'scan and verify' while FL only does that if you select that option.
It is actually usefull if you have some things installed in your vst folder that use dynamically linked libraries for such things as extra modules, etc: an in depth scan ( scan and verify ) will keep those from being listed as individual plugins.

still, i far prefer podium in that it doesn't presume anything: if i want a plugin, i just import it.

I've got plugins which T2 will not recognise, no matter what I try; these include the 'normal' looking skinned Hematohm, so it's not just buggy homebrewed VSTs. I've tried every different method I can think of to get them recognised, to no avail, so I'm just going to have to live without a whole bunch of FX and instruments.
Coffee please, black, no sugar.

When I repeated the question "WHY does T do a plug scan," I wasn't criticizing T, I was really trying to understand why (beyond, of course, that it has been programmed to do so....which of course raises the question, why has it been programmed to do so).

Anyways, I think ModuLR addressed the question in a way that makes sense.

I have wondered the same thing. I tell it not to reascan, yet it rescans every time, spending some time I'd rather spend waiting for Reason to load the damn drum kit :)

Did you try the 'select/deselect' trick stated earlier? 'Cause there's no way it should be rescanning each time.

I'm thinking it might be system-related somehow? Because I haven't read many complaints about this, yet mine seems to reset itself without any intervention.

Hmmmm...

UUPP... I have been using traktion for over 2 years now and one of my major unrealised gripes was the time it took to scan my mad list of freebie synths. Not once did i consider looking for anything to stop the scanning.

Just tried and works a treat; from 5 mins of sitting round staring at the wallpaper everytime i switch on to 10 seconds and here i go.

brilliant. this thread just made my night.

cheers guys
