i figure that if my system struggles with filters, why not just add effects from the alesis and record that? im only looking at demoing songs anyhoo.

I'd also like to find out about these. Was in the market for a Mackie Onyx 1620 + Firewire, but it turns out I can't afford it

Does anyone know if these would offer a good low-cost alternative?

Just got the Alesis MueltiMix Firewire 8 and I must say very sweet indeed. This little powerhouse just makes recording to the CPU a absolute breeze. I cant belive how clean it sounds. Best of all the price is so nice. One large problem tho only stereo outs to the mix down. Great for demo's or live recordings if thats what you need.

In my thinking I about the Mackie 1620 I can't afford to have anything else. Not only do you have the outs to record too you also have the control room and headphone outs with volume control. Then there are the great preamps. I just love it.

I looked at the Alesis at GC this past week end and that is all it took for me to know I made the right decision.
