The one thing to remember about the VB freebie is that it doesn't do MIDI- hence no DXis or controllers :(
It can still be pretty handy, though...

If you don't mind that limitation both SpinAudio and FXPansion still have older wrappers for free download which would perform a bit better.

No that's the other way round ;)

VB is fine if you just want effects but if you want to use instruments the only way would be to use a host within a host like Console or the FL Studio plugin.
