Tracktion Software

I'm confused by getting responded to twice.

And the second one seemed to be 'stronger', though I hadn't even responded yet!

My specs:

- ASUS A7N8X-X Motherboard with Barton AthlonXP 2600+
- 512 MB Samsung 'mediocre' RAM in one stick.
- 2 IDE 7200 RPM Hard Drives
- Audiophile 24/96
- ATI Radeon 9250 video card
- Some sort of Sony DVD-burner

That's about it. Nothing special.

I record at 24-bit 44.1k... I don't use too many VSTs and when CPU starts getting up to about half, I start freezing or rendering, saving individual edits as I go. I don't know why people get so hung up on pushing things to the upper limits of their CPU before they start freezing. I prefer preventative medicine, ya know?

...and it's still not running smoothly, on an AMD Athlon X2 3800+ with an ASUS A8V Deluxe.

Must be the aiff issue, which hasn't been fixed in the latest update, or my RAM.

Either way, I'm getting Cubase for now, and hanging on the Tracktion.

What is T2 doing exactly that you consider it unstable? What are you doing when it becomes unstable?

I've ran the demo and recording a lot of tracks on a A64 3000+ with an ATI Xpress board, an Athlon XP 2500+ with an A7V600 Via board, and a 1.33Ghz Celeron with an Intel board, 830GM chipset. The A64 and Celeron with a US122, the AXP 2500+ with an Echo Mia.

The fact that it has run flawlessly across three different architectures is quite a good indicator of T's reliability.

Seriously, now - my specific problem is that I recorded an album at a studio I no longer have access to, and I exported the recorded material (LOT'S of it) as .aiff (Logic defaults to that).

Apparently Tracktion passionately dislikes .aiff files, and I have 30-90 (no exaggeration) per song, which is even worse. I tried converting to wav, but that didn't help either...

What it's doing - simply slowing down the GUI, which is enough to make it uncomfortable to work in (and yes, I did try hard to live with it).

So I'm stuck with these files, because converting doesn't help, and Tracktion won't play them. I've actually heard that the next update may fix this issue, but I have to have my album finished by the end of this month, and I can't afford to dick around any longer.

On a side note, disregarding the GUI issues, I don't like the way Tracktion deals with multiple audio files, unless I'm missing something - you don't seem to be able to fade in or adjust the length of multiple tracks simultaneously, and there were other things as well.

I'm hoping to come back and give Tracktion another go soon, but my first priority is getting this album finished!

huh?
If you want to fade all tracks, insert automation on the master buss or use the handy-dandy master fade-in/fade-out tools. If you just want fades on some tracks, buss them to another track and use automation on that subgroup track. Easy peasy.

Yes, but all those things take time - in Cubase (I know I'm going to get flamed here) you select all audio files, and drag one fade handle, and they all fade...

That is a problem. Luckily (for me anyway) it's not something I have to worry about. Had I attempted it, I am sure I'd run into the same problem.
