Oh dear...This setup was going to be my hardware upgrade path. But I don't want Tracktion to slip and hurt itself on the twisty dual core roadway.

Well, it may be fine, mando - read back to what my main problem seems to be.

It's all a bloody lottery anyway!

Slow GUI. Sluggish even, is what I read. Or feared. (I'll ignore the aiiffff file issue)
What I don't understand is that a dual core system should eliminate that sluggish gui syndrome. From Beno's comments, it seems T would use one core for GUI/UI stuff and the other for audio/VST. Have you messed around with PCI timing for video? And told XP which core to use for its tasks?

You could be right about the lottery, but I hope we'd have better odds with all the Kvr expertise available.

mando, if you're going to base your whole choice upon boogooloo's experiences, you gotta shake yourself, no?

If you need to upgrade your computer, you upgrade your computer! If you don't need to, you don't.

There's no thread saying, "Uh-oh, AMDX2 screws up Tracktion!" so don't be so alarmist!

Yes, I agree.

Ah, crap, all these hidden protocols. How alarmist should I be, Lunch? And how does one become a low intensity alarmist?

I need to upgrade my machine because it's old and slow. (And so am I) The X2 3800 and A8V combo was #1 on my shopping list and I saw boog's post and yes, alarm bells went off. Being so old and slow, it took a little while to ramp up to alarmist speed.

But if I get that combo and T is sluggish, you'll have to live with it. Ummm... No. I'll have to live with it, but you'll have terrible forum guilt that will gnaw at you everytime you post. Do you really want that? :D

Not that it is any of my business, and I don't know your specific needs, but personally I wouldn't bother with the X2s. For real hardcore number cruching a single core may provide better results for a whole lot less money punch for punch.

You mean better results for Tracktion, right? One of my problems was having to make a choice which would suit Cubase is Tracktion still didn't want to play, and that combo is highly recommended by most Steinys.

Really? Don't you think giving Windoze it's own core and T it's own plus a bit will open vaaassst VST vistas that mere mono-core users could only dream of?

I'm open to saving money. Make it your business, tell me more, valley.

mando: you should be alarmist only when it's substantiated by at least... I don't know... 4 other posts. With Booger, that brings you up to a nice round "5". Then you can be alarmist.

:D

Oh, and those posts have to be all with specific evidence that it's the X2 that's causing the problem. Too many people too quick to point fingers.

Regarding the steinies-- I wouldn't go by anything said on Cubase.net or whatever it's called. ;)

Even more importantly, people know nothing. Not even me. The trouble is that when one person says something with an air of authority, it's taken as 'fact'. Before you know it, what was once a strongly-stated opinion becomes 'law', upheld by the masses.

Look at it this way:

A 3400 single core is a single processor with a clock speed of say 2.2GHz (I forget AMDs current clock steppings, ao that's just figurative).

At 3400 dual core will be two processors each running at half the total clock speed. I.E. 1.1Ghz.

The upshot is logically two tasks can run efficiently on a dual core at a total of 2.2Ghz. One time intensive task (mpeg4 encoding for example) can only push one CPU to red-line, so consequently your max performance is limited to 1.1GHz.

The flipside is that a single core can do two tasks only very fractionally less efficiently than a dual core, and one task vastly more efficiently.

[edit]Prices seem to have corrected somewhat in the last month, so at around 4000+ ratings, the price difference is negligble.

No.

I mean I'm putting together a PC at work specifically for *heavy* duty number crunching. I'm using a single core CPU. I just needed raw gigahertz, not elegance. If I'm going to spend 500 bucks on a CPU, I'll just buy a second PC and just cluster the bastards.

A single core 3800 is 2.4 ghz, while the dual core 3800 runs at 2x2.0 ghz. That's a pretty far cry from half.
