T2 Revives Prog Rock!

I've found that using T2, and a handful of VSTi's, nearly everyone can afford to have a Keith Emerson/Rick Wakeman keyboard rig in the comfort of their own home.

So with that as inspiration, I submit for an inevitable combination of ridicule and praise, my first expedition into serious progressive rock, all thanks to T2:

I'm amazed at the power that can be had basically for free, when 20 years ago mountains of gear were required.

Nice job! It's definitely your talent showing through, but its nice that you feel T2 helped you get it out of your head and into ours.

Thanks for all the kind words! T2 definitely had a huge part in this, I think it would have ended up over-simplified had I stuck with Cubase as a compositional tool...

Subz, at first I was surprised that you could hear this sort of thing on the radio...but then radio in the UK is probably far less dull than radio here in the U.S. (which sucks)...

Anyway, back OT:

The drum track is quite buried in the intro. The timing is very unstable(?) from 1:30 or so, and it's not an odd timing issue, it's just off. Same thing at 2:30, if you're going to do that kind of staccato feel thing you need to tighten it up.

The drums are definitely weak though. You need to work on that IMO.

Thanks for the good critique, yes that is definitely the case. I'll re-record the piano this weekend, and, fortunately, an old drummer friend of mine has resurfaced after hearing this and said he would love to record drums on it. I told him that I deliberately made the drums awful so that he would volunteer to play on it, although the fact is I'm best kept to guitar and keys

And another friend is also busy working on vocals, so hopefully I can re-post it here sometime soon with the real drums and vocals.

Thanks again to lending your ears to this. I am also very new to recording myself, so any tips production-wise would be helpful as well..I am still taking baby steps with understanding the finer points of compression, eq, and how not to over-do the reverb, etc...

and I think you should Quantize your piano notes.
and the solo guitar got pretty good stereo delay at 4:00

I've been using T for prog as well, albeit a bit more modern, Spock's Beard meets King's X way.

There's only two people in the band so far, and we're doing the drums and keys in Reason, rewired to T. It works well.

And yes Beno, T definitely makes the process easier!

Drums are not bad, but sometimes cymbals are a bit too low in the mix, IMHO (I hope your friend will record real drums,soon)

Hey, another prog-rocker at KVR! I'd love to hear your stuff. Spock's Beard totally inspired me to revisit my old 70's faves, now I'm a tremendous SB fan.

I used to rewire drums from reason also, although I eventually found it easier to play the drums on the keyboard, one drum and a few bars at a time -- mostly because some parts I just can't get to fit into bars/beats that makes sense...

I use Reason with ReDrum, but I do the drums "by hand", like you do. I don't use the drum machine aspect of it, because it became too limiting, too quickly.

You can use ReDrum as a virtual sampler instrument just as you can any of the others, by assigning a midi track and midi input to it. Works great, and you can load AIFF or wav samples too, which means I can use the stuff I bought for Acid awhile back (one hits).
