EMI's copy protection malware made it's way to my computer in spite of the shift trick. Completely b0rked mouse operation: I couldn't right-click or drag-select anymore. Oh well, at least I could see the malware in my processes list. Had it been a rootkit, I could never have ended the running tasks from there.
Anyway, I have a fully functional Ubuntu system now, so I can at least play my M83 CD again. Hopefully.

My problem with this whole situation, invasive copy protection aside, is the fact that Sony is now in bed with blackhats. There is simply no way Sony can be trusted anymore.

I like to listen to well engineered albums on my monitors for reference.

My hi-fi speakers have a completely different frequency response.
Then they're hardly hi fi (high fidelity) :)

I agree. I'm avoiding Sony like hell now, it's just like PeoplePC.

why do I play music on my hi-fi - errr becasue it urinates on the sound quality of my emu 1280m from a great height

something to do with being designed for the job - better power regulators jitter supression etc

- and nte more obvious one (since the 1820 sounds lovely) is that it is completely silent

and as for ipods - dont make me laugh
I believe every thread should devolve into character attacks and witch-burning. It really helps the discussion.

So I suppose tickling you with an ipod would be out of the question then?

Nothing on God's green Earth could possibly make me even slightly interested in any kind of iPod. It would be like listening to the radio, except that you would never hear anything new [which, on reflection, makes it exactly like listening to the radio].
I have more than 600 CD's and the only way I can ever decide what to listen to is by doing the Mission: Impossible thing and going through the album covers. Its a big part of the process and it gives you something to do while you're listening. [I try to avoid just having music playing as it is either too distracting, because I want to listen, not just hear] or I miss the good bits. For me, a Discman makes infinitely more sense, especially newer ones that get around 15 discs from two AA Duracells.

No it doesn't.

I think you'll find that Windoze accounts for 98% of pirates. Then there is the fact that for the vast majority of folk, they won't go to any effort to defeat the anti-piracy measures as mostly they do it for convenince. When it ceases to be convenient, they cease doing it.

When could Sony ever be trusted? They are the dodgiest pricks around and have been for as far back as I can remember. Do you know why they bought CBS Records? Because no-one would support their spankin' new mini-disc format so, after intimidation and threats didn't work, they bought the biggest record company they could afford to scare the others shitless so they would bend to Sony's will.

Most people my age who never had a reason to buy a CD player because they already just use their computer.

The only reason I would buy a CD Player is if it had a superior sound quality to my CD rom, in which case I wouldnt tell much difference through my average speakers.

My sentiments exactly.
I put them in the same bracket as mobile phones...the market made people feel they have a need. Trouble is that the consumers don't feel the need to not follow the sheep.

I'm also with Bones on CDs and computers...I can't remember when I ever listened to any CD on my PC - it's just a pain in the arse to do it. Although that may be more to do with my setup - as I use an Aardvark soundcard, I can't use your average media player to play CDs on. I basically have to load up my host to do that.

And anyway...when I listen to music, I much prefer to relax in a comfy chair, with a glass of wine and with speakers that actually play frequencies under 45Hz. Nearfields don't do justice to a good listening session - and certainly PC speakers don't.

So, if so many people play music on their PCs and iPods...does that mean that you all don't have a decent HiFi etc to play on? So how do you master your own music? On earphones or nearfields or PC speakers :?

Oh dear...I'm agreeing with Bones an awful lot recently...I must be getting older than I thought.

:hihi:

I don't think I would be interested in many of Sony's massive cattalogue, anyway. Personal taste is personal taste, but thats about it - big deal. Thank god the average person today has more choice.

I think they knew it was a security breach and also that they were counting on it NOT being discovered.

...as probably any CD is.

They just like to make it clear that they're not regarding their own customers as thieving scum, unlike some other records companies.
