ozone or Voxengo Mastering Suite or ....

I have plugs from both developers - my advice - try the demos and see which is better for you. I have purhased Voxengo's Pristine Space and Voxformer (love them both, use them almost daily), but the mastering plugs didn't catch my ear. Then again, I've been using Ozone since version 1. They're both so good, that it's hard to move someone off of their decision once they've made it, and I'm no exception.
There's a really good Ozone 3 review on audioMIDI.com. As much as I like this plug, I'm not sure if the bundle should be the deciding factor unless you're looking for distortion and spectral processing. Trash and Spectron are great plugs - I have them both - but if you're looking at mastering only, stick with comparing apples to apples.

that i heard great things about ozone's dithering.fritzman wrote:Hm, then what did you wanted to get across with your first statement? Just curious ...Jason Brian Merrill wrote:no, never. Thats why i said what i did. Now, if i said "ozone's dither sounds much better" that would be a different story.
Nonetheless, i have not thoroughly researched the dithering quality, no.,
what else could i mean by that?

I dunno. And I even dunno what this statement is worth if you don't hear any difference between ditherings or hear dithering at all? So you could have said something about your Wendekreisbeschleuniger, too.Jason Brian Merrill wrote:that i heard great things about ozone's dithering.fritzman wrote: Hm, then what did you wanted to get across with your first statement? Dude, I never claimed to have analyzed the difference between anything!!!
I do know however, that dithering does make a noticable difference, but i have never compared any companies dithering, i use samplitudes...
What if you were talking about B4, and you didnt hear it personally, but a few people told you it was a great B3 sim. If someone asked a question comparing B4 to some other synth, wouldnt you say "hey ive heard great things about b4, check it out~!"
???
i dont understand why you are questioning me.
perhaps there shouldnt be any reviews of anyhting, peeople should just hear everything themselves, and test everything extensively... and maybe theyll have a few minutes in between for doing some music.
Usually if someone says "hey, product A is pretty cool, you should check it out" then i will, and then use my own ears to tell me if i like it.

fritz, this is the funniest thing i've read in ages. if there was an award for the most 'it's so cool and makes everything warm and fuzzy, too bad you can't hear it, it's really subtle, you know, but a lot of development went into it and it is unique and makes thing pristine and defined and enhanced, but you can't hear it, because it's so awesome' developer, it would go to voxengo. :pfritzman wrote:I dunno. I'd miss my Voxengo plugins more than my Ozone if one had to go. They are both excellent but I like the sound I get with Voxengo better.

it started with this:
This statement is funny in many ways, but anyway... Then came this:RapRogue wrote:Only thing Ozone really wins in is the Dither. And that
is more of a host vs host thing.
Ozones dithering WINS was the statement and you said YES! This tells me that you claim to know what you're talking about and not what you heard just somewhere. Sorry if I understand this pretty straight like this. But probably I totally misinterpret you here.fritzman wrote:But did you hear the difference in the dithering?Jason Brian Merrill wrote:yes i have heard great things about ozones dithering...
But hey, what do I care anyway? I just was a little curious to find out if you actually heard the difference and found out that you didn't hear the difference but were just pretending to know what you're talking about. Actually it looks like this to me. Having heard something ABOUT something isn't worth too much. Having heard things for yourself makes your statement and opinion here at KvR or anywhere else in the world worth something. Then it has substance. And this is the reason why I asked.
No big deal for me. I should have kept myself out of this right from the start. I just was in the mood to ask a little deeper.
BTW, my amusement started with RapRogues statement that Ozones dithering wins which actually is most questionable for me and that triggered my curiosity. This sounds just like ... nah, I wont say that.
Best wishes, FRitz

cool that you like it. Dithering is a serious thing. I can't hear it but it makes my audio better. Man yes, it's cool to have some noise added at -76dB.

Get Soniformer + Ozone and you have a complete mastering setup. I know that: 1) as far as sound quality goes, Ozone's EQ beats the pants off of CurveEQ, and 2) sound quality wise, Ozone's Limiter beats the pants off of Elephant, and that 3) everyone is unanimous that the MBIT+ is more transparent then the other dithers.
The harmonic exciter is quite useful, and combined with with EQ you have a poor-man's HarmoniEQ. A lot of people really like the reverb but you don't have a lot of options (Plate or Room selections only.) The weakest points of the whole plug-in is the crossover network and the multiband compressor module is pretty stinky.

Get Voxengo Soniformer (unique compressor, there is none like this anywhere in the world, software or hardware) and PLParEQ (free). For colorful compression, like fritzman suggested, get the digitalfishpnoes stuff and Daniels limiters.
Btw. I DO hear a difference in dithering. It's even rather obvious, one just needs to learn what to listen to.
Try playing some closed hihats, preferrably synthesised within a 32bit environment, or some high quality 24 bit recorded ones, put a nice EQ on them (PLParEQ will do fine), cut or boost some relevant frequencies then insert your choise of dithering plugins for shootout. Now, switch back and forth between these and listen to the transients and overall color.
EDIT: there was a good dithering shootout with sound examples somewhere.. it was quite a long time ago. It had a voting system where people could rank them before it revealed the answers. Guess which one was head and shoulders before the others?
Ozone's dithering is good, very good. It's limiter is also IMHO the best out there together with Voxengo Elephant (they are too different to really compare). Should speak loads that Z-systems licensed the limiter from iZotope, at least this is what some people pointed out on PSW r/e/p forum.
