(and i love voxengo :D)
Yes,

I sounded a little bitchy and that wasn't cool. I didn't take it in a bad way but obviously I didn't understand your first posting correctly.
No prob though. I should stay silent with such things and roll my eyes privately for myself when I see such statements.

that i heard great things about ozone's dithering.

what else could i mean by that?
I dunno. And I even dunno what this statement is worth if you don't hear any difference between ditherings or hear dithering at all? So you could have said something about your Wendekreisbeschleuniger, too. :hihi:

Have fun, FRitz
fritz, this is the funniest thing i've read in ages. if there was an award for the most 'it's so cool and makes everything warm and fuzzy, too bad you can't hear it, it's really subtle, you know, but a lot of development went into it and it is unique and makes thing pristine and defined and enhanced, but you can't hear it, because it's so awesome' developer, it would go to voxengo. :p ;)
errmm, thats not what i said at all, perhaps you should read again.

Dude, I never claimed to have analyzed the difference between anything!!!

I do know however, that dithering does make a noticable difference, but i have never compared any companies dithering, i use samplitudes...

i dont understand why you are questioning me.
OK sir,

it started with this:
RapRogue wrote:Only thing Ozone really wins in is the Dither. And that
is more of a host vs host thing.
This statement is funny in many ways, but anyway... Then came this:
fritzman wrote:
Jason Brian Merrill wrote:yes i have heard great things about ozones dithering...
But did you hear the difference in the dithering?
Ozones dithering WINS was the statement and you said YES! This tells me that you claim to know what you're talking about and not what you heard just somewhere. Sorry if I understand this pretty straight like this. But probably I totally misinterpret you here.

But hey, what do I care anyway? I just was a little curious to find out if you actually heard the difference and found out that you didn't hear the difference but were just pretending to know what you're talking about. Actually it looks like this to me. Having heard something ABOUT something isn't worth too much. Having heard things for yourself makes your statement and opinion here at KvR or anywhere else in the world worth something. Then it has substance. And this is the reason why I asked.

No big deal for me. I should have kept myself out of this right from the start. I just was in the mood to ask a little deeper.
BTW, my amusement started with RapRogues statement that Ozones dithering wins which actually is most questionable for me and that triggered my curiosity. This sounds just like ... nah, I wont say that.

Best wishes, FRitz
errmm, i didnt agree with raprouge nessecarily, i just said yes, i have heard great things about ozones dither, not yes, Ozones dither wins. what about that dont you understand, and why are you whining about it?

I would definitely customize. If you want to go for a suite between those two, I'd go for the Voxengo. Instead, I would go with Voxengo Soniformer and Elephant, PSP Masterpack/Vintage Warmer/Nitro/Master Q/608 Multi-delay, Elemental Audio Eqium/Neodynium/Inspector XL. For reverb, probably Spin Audio.
You'll spend more, but you'll appreciate the variety and getting the best of what the companies offer.
By the way, all Voxengo stuff is great.

Post

Ozone and InspectorXL are both part of all of my default templates (Oaone is turned off until everything is bounced/rendered, of course).

Has anyone added up the cost of the Voxengo plugins that put in in line with getting Ozone for $199US? I'd be curious how that works out...

Here's that interesting dither shootout. I highly recommend doing the blind test.

Warning -- Spoiler ahead. Don't read if you plan to take part in the blind listening test.

One would think that the differences between the dithers would be subtle at best. If the chart is to be believed, the Megabit Max has a subliminal message embedded that forces the listener to choose it over the others.

Really, is it possible for a dither to be that different? (I don't have golden ears so can't really answer).

Ozone 3 out does Voxengo and I dont have demos I have full versions, I have been using Izotope for years with flawless results. I dont care which is the best because I still use Voxformer alot for vocals and stuff but once I finnish the entire mix and mix down to two tracks I pull out Ozone.

For starters I play most of my own compositions from scratch no pre made drum beats no trance effects nothing, If i want a trance effect im good enough to emulate it by playing live, The point for me is by the time im down to my final master my composition is so tight and hot and still barley touching the peek so I for one am almost at master levels prior to mastering. very little work needs to be done on any of my mix as I carefully test every part going into and out of the mix before the final showdown at the O.K. corral.

The only area I can see myself reaching for Vox stuff on the final mix is because I got tired and lazy during the recording process and didnt finnish up my project professionally, of which I rarely see myself doing lately :)

I do attest to the quality of Voxengo and there priceing is some of the best in the bus, but I use my Vox stuff for specialized work such as vocals or mabey I pull out the analog suite to mash up some stuff but I never ever though about using it for mastering, untill I read up here on how many ravionus polite ppl recomend it for such a purpose.

Which is why I love KvR you can always get some good tips from the folks here and most are right about what they say.

So to that effect GET THE VOXENGO stuff esp if your on a budget, dont even second guess it just go buy it.

But you wont be disapointed with Izotope Ozone 3 , but stay away from Ozone 1.

WARNING OZONE 3 is a HOG.

I did that test. (God help me! I need a life!) In all examples, the dither is amplified so you can clearly hear it. The Ozone dither effectively reduced the effects of truncation (some did not) and sounded way better than all of the others. It stuck out like a sore thumb.

With dither, it's either doing it's job or not. As an added plus, Ozone's dither noise was the most pleasing to the ears. BUT - in the real world, you probably won't hear the difference unless your monitors are set to a very, very high volume. No one would be the wiser to which dither you use in a real world scenario. But if you're anal like me, why settle? Quality is in the details.

bmanic, at volumes dithering is actually heard, the test posted on http://www.24-96.net/dither/ is NOT APPLICABLE. It's a mystery what they actually wanted to measure with that benchmark. Or at least, I have not clue what.

I agree with Aleksey here i thought it had some use but it doesnt.
With good monitors you can here the effect of dither on the song and each dither sounds different.
A good all round dither are the POW algorithms.
Its best to have a few and carefully listen to which one will compliment the song most.
Also high noise shaping dither sounds good in theory but i feel it does more harm than good.

Hehe, I'm not whining at all. Could we agree that I possibly misinterpreted what you wrote and that I appologize for having said anything about it?

I agree, the test is flawed but does show the type of noise inserted. Also, megabit max dithering DOES do a better job than any of the others in that fade out test. Simple as that.

However, I've done dithering shootouts of my own and at least last time I checked I preferred Megabit max dithering with POW-R (the 3rd one) being very close. In this shootout I remeber trying Waves IDR (in L2), UV22 HR, Megabit max, Wabelab's native dithers and the one built into FL Studio.

One more thing. Dithering is very subtle. Like Doug1 said, you need good monitoring to hear the differences. The nature of the differences is also very much dependant on the audio itself. Chosing dithering for very distorted huge walls of guitar might be futile, just insert whatever you have. :)

It's a thing of taste, totally. As far as dithering is correct (prevents truncation errors and thus spectral 'spikes' from appearing), you can choose whatever sounds best.

From what I know so far, dithering method choice GREATLY depends on the general consensus. From business point of view, POW-r is a profitable product (and they are not allowing to use POW-r in anything priced below $350 or something) which can be made a wide-spread solution. But this has nothing to do with its subjective QUALITY. As we see, MegabitMax sounds as good to some people.

I myself like Elephant's (of course :) dithering - its 'noise shaping' curve sounds smoother than anything to me (that's how I check noise-shaping quality).
