I didn't answer your question linzatti: Voxengo Marquis. This thing has so many faces that it takes some time to learn to use all the possibilities it has. Great tone. Check it out is my suggestion.

Best wishes, FRitz
Unfortunately it doesn't have low CPU usage though.

On my Dual Core Intel they actually both take the same CPU usage but to be honest, their CPU usage is relatively high. Both sound fantastic though, the Marquis sounds extremely amalog and colours the sound in the best way I've ever heard, the GCO to me can add some distortion or work as a really smooth compressor. I still use both very much.
I actually find the GCO-1 remarkably low in CPU consumption. The beauty of it too is that it is very versatile because you can run it in different modes - classic (analogue warmth... hmm!), opto, etc.

As a fellow Ableton Live user I can also vouch for the fact that it works great in Live 5 :D

The Voxengo stuff usually sounds great, but I find it slightly higher in CPU.
For low CPU usage, I hear the TrackPlug by WaveArts is good, but I personally dislike it's sound.
Likewise. I ran several of the TrackPlug on different tracks and it really messed up the mix. Possibly user error of course, but even using the developer's own presets, this one really muddied things up.

yea agreed headquest. It's quite strange though, how is it possible that the Marquis and GCO1 take the same CPU usage on my dual core ? lol wierd :D

But I agree, the various algorithms provided by GCO1 is what I love most about it too. Each sounds significantly different with the exception of Smooth 1 & Smooth 2 which are relatively similar.

Still a brilliant day-to-day compressor imho, can do so many things but seems to lack that extremely analogue sound that the Marquis brings to the table :D

Thanks, couldn't remember which was yours.

Hm,

we could argue about that. I wouldn't say that Marquis is very low on CPU but it is efficient. But I think you're right. Probably it was meant to suggest compressors that are good and very light on the CPU.

Yes, since I got my new monitors I can hear it, too - don't know whether it's analog or something else but i like what it does to the sound. Couldn't hear it before with the hifi speakers I used, though.

I really like Sonalksis compressor. I think its sound is soft which i love if I use it as a bus compressor and you can make it sound quite hard too if you want. The limiter in it is really great sounding also.

I've tried the Voxengo Marquis Compressor and I am loveing it. One minor thing that I have noticed from the little I have tried it out is that it can make my snares and kicks sound boxy. Maybe I am doing something "wrong" with it, I don't know.

I really like Kjaerhus' GCO-1 because of its sound for of all but also for its five compression envelope modes and the ability to tweak it, but/which you also can with Voxengo Marquis Compressor. When using the Classic envelope option, I can get a sound that I haven't been able to with the others.

I own Sonalksis compressor and when I have the money I will for certain get the two others if they then still are standing thier position. Now I just got to find a great limiter (not brickwall) but I actually love the one in the Sonalksis compressor.

I hope my comment is to any help. Just so you know, I am an amateur, not a pro with golden ears.

Best Regards

punkrockdude a nice limiter is the Kjaerhus GPP-1 for tracks. It also does have an optional brickwall mode, I use it everywhere, sounds fantastic !

thanks for all the help... I´ve been reading som Kjaerhus reviews in a swedish studio magazine. About the sonalksis-plugins, they do sound great... A bit heavy on the CPU to bust out on every single channel, but they really work as bus compressors too - like mentioned above.

Can still buy them:

jrrshop still sells the akai plugins also, which seem to be increasingly hard to find.

the new CL series from buzzroom is really nice (esp. for the price) and cpu efficient... The 201 is very nice sounding and Buzzroom has a new multiband compressor to add to the bundle and updates coming. Worth a demo download.

Yeah, you gotta check these out, Buzzroom's really on to something with these. They have a real analog flair to them. His free plugins are very good too, especially his old "BuzVintageMaxi" which appears to be a beta version of the CL plugs. That one sounds incredible on drum busses; just insert & turn it up, kinda like an 1176. :D
