John Pilger did a good bit in one of his books about the 'destruction' of fleet street, the downfall of the 'intelligent' working class media etc.
Not saying there's a conspiracy or anything, just a related set of events/circumstances that are integral parts of the mass-consumerist ostensibly 'free' market capitalist system.

Yeah, I don't know - is there a conspiracy or does the "free market" drive us towards this complete nihilism? The problem with any of those "the free market causes this naturally" arguments (good or bad) is that someone, somewhere is inevitably controlling events to make things happen, be it regulations, overthrowing govts, free markets zones. I know the image of a bunch of old men in a room and the word "conspiracy" are totally disregarded (and I wonder why), but you have to wonder becuase these systems server so few, so well. Somebody knows that insecure, entertained product-slaves make more profits and allow for less responsible gov't.

does it bother you that sex sells and enough people are shallow enough to perpetuate it? I think it sad myself...but then I am pre-mtv generation...we liked songs and bands because of the music and how it spoke to us..then along comes mtv and "he's so cute", "she's hot" Sorry but I dont think Janis Joplin was much to look at...but I think she did more for music then any hot chick.

When I was 18 I was gonna be a rock star. When I was 25 I was gonna be a rock star. When I reached 30 I was worried I wouldn't be a rock star. By the time my mid 30's came around I finally understood what music really meant to me. Now at 46 I still want to be recoginized for what I have accomplished, but I'm glad my youthful dreams didn't come true...otherwise I would of missed out on so much fun I have had, most of it alone under the headphones. The truth is fame is superficial, and everyday I still am humbled by how my music can "fix" so many things for me.

Whether I'm gifted or not is purely subjective, but there is no doubt in my mind that I have one of the greatest gifts (as do we all)...do you think that appreciation for my gift would be there had my life been what I dreamt of, or would I be depressed over what use to be at this point? At least right now it's still what could be, it can only get better as I keep getting better and gaining more from my music besides the superficial.

Good point, that's one of the reasons I truly detest all this pop-idol, x-factor bullshit.
Industry types just trying to create a hype over an artist they will likely drop at the first opportunity after they have marketed them to death & made a nice wad.
They create their image, choose their songwriters, producers etc. etc. the poor sods likely have little choice in what happens & will likely make minimum money, but will find it very difficult to reintegrate into 'normal' life afterwards.
I watched 'trisha' one time (I don't normally watch daytime tv chatshow crowd participation shite) but this one was partly about ex boyband members etc. & what they did after the bubble burst - it was quite sobering.
The one who did best afterwards was a guy who was careful with the money he made & bthen used his experience to start managing other acts (he obviously saw where the money could be made).
coincidentally a girl a few houses down the road was on x-factor this year, got kicked off two weeks ago - as long as i've lived here she has just wanted to be on x-factor or something similar, tried the year before & didn't get through, no doubt she'll keep trying.
Thing is she said what many construe as derogatory things about where she comes from & now she's not famous etc (at least not yet) has likely lost her job plus is likely to get stick for some of the ill-advised things she said on national tv.
