If you guys haven't seen it already, track down a copy of the episode "Make It Funky" from the mid-90s BBC music history series "Dancing In the Street" ... it's a really good history that tracks, amongst other things, the evolution of the "slap" funk bassline ... from memory, various funk bassplayers keep pointing back to Larry Graham ... then it cuts to Larry, who is working in a cheap bar band in the midwest somewhere

There is a difference between "funky" and "the funk".

The term "funky" is over used today to describe a danceable beat/tune, whereas "the funk" is so much more than just a song to dance to.

It isnt 'funk' but uses funk elements for a different approach.. Krafty kuts and all use funk basslines and a lot of it is beats that are from funk records and sped up which are very powerful on the dance floor

Same with drum n bass too. Some artists have the funk but have adopted it into a new formula with the same soulful/uplifiting response.

Not everyone has a 6 piece band, so a bedroom studio is one way to get the funk out of your head and into a cd player. Its all about skillful programming. Some have got it.. Most dont.

There is also a difference in what most people nowdays consider funky and what's considered funky in dnb/breakbeat circles.

Trance is also danceable but it isn't funky. Funky techno hasn't got anything to do with funk either.

But soulfull drum'n'bass (or liquid funk), funky breaks and disco house inherited the style, the modes and progressions, the chops and riffs, the soulfullness and the beats and the approach to beatmaking -- from the funky soul music of 60s and 70s, and even some of that dreaded pitch-bent-keyboard-riff stuff from the 80s funk

Sure, not all tracks in this style are good at this, but quite few of them really have t3h funk.

Funk has always been there, but is it really making a come back? I have the impression that a group like Slapbak is struggling to survive. Their latest CD "II black IV black radio" is on presale (the CD label is a stuck on inkjet print) at www.funktothemax.com, and their web sites (www.slapbak.com and www.toxicfunkrecords.com) were for sale several times lately...

Yeah great episode, I saw it when it was on the BBC but havent been able to find it anywhere, I'd like to see it again

Anybody like the Isley brothers? They made some cheezy stuff but they have quite a few gems. One of my favs are "take me to the next phase", "that lady", "it's your thing", "fight the power".

The rhythm section in this band was mostly done by 1 person (Ernie Isley). Guitar, bass and drums.
