----Ebay is nearly impossible to deal with from either side of the fence, as a buyer/seller/whatever. You happened to mention them, so I took the opportunity to post what I know about them, and a maybe less than positive-side look at their "copy protection services".
----If I could make $2 per warez auction found on Ebay (and I'd only be spotting music software and photoshop stuff, since those are my areas of specialty software-wise) I could seriously quit my day job, and pay rent, eat, and maybe even continue my vodka drinking habit, all by spotting Ebay warez dealers at $2 a head. I bet many people here could do the same, and it's everyday, 24/7, they are so easy to find it is ridiculous.
----What's kind of odd to me ? That not many companies are even signed up in the Vero program, so if they complain to Ebay, or someone reports a warez dealer selling cracks of that companies stuff, it gets erased without being looked into.
----Between Ebay and Paypal (we all know they own Paypal right?) it's the digital mafia.
----As for the warez dispute, it's a new paradigm in thievery, it deserves a second look, new rules & punishments perhaps. I just look at it as though it were my intellectual property being stolen, that seems to be enough to stop me from using cracked software. That and like many others have said, a lot of good freebee plugs, and I'll add, a lot of group buys, and "used" plug-in license sales here in the K-v-R marketplace. Not everyone can afford the latest convolution reverb, or super mastering compressor, and not everyone needs those things, or even knows what to do with them. Live within your means, and meanwhile, do something with your life, like make some music with what you have. *shrug*

I already broke relations to a cousin that thinks Piracy is "OK", he has a Playstation 2 with 30 Pirated games. And he is not young, he owns his own profitable car-shop, he could easily afford those games. :-\ I no longer talk to him, and if I see him again, I will ask if he still steals stuff. :-\

Slightly off topic but with regards to eBay...eBay is a load of old wank and the people who reckon they have created an 'eBay community' should be ashamed of themselves.

I have been involved in counterfeit issues on eBay recently and the amazing thing is that they allow a questionable auction to proceed to its conclusion before taking any action (if they do at all) - you know why ? So that they are assured of getting their auction fee of course...then all they do is say "we have withdrawn this product so be careful"...you can even still go ahead and buy the questionable item.

I'm having a hard time with a guy that is seling his own samples, plus a CD with 750 meg of VSTs. He says is all legal, but when I asked for a file-listing, he complained and treated me. Hummm.... I wonder, will I have to pay $20 to see this? ....

Raise the prices to something not abusive and everybody will use legit software.

You should think about it... Why not shell 5000 copies & make 50.000 $ instead making 50.000 $ with 500 copies. The difference? You won't become a rich man, your software will be a perfect candidate to be pirated and you will have less users and less money for future upgrades.

I know there is a work, time & effort to make software, but we have to work hard too and make the money for pay the software, so nothing is easy for nobody.

Be more compasive with the people that really pays for software.

Microsoft has just done a brilliant thing. The newest version of Visual Studio and SQL Server are also available as free "express" versions for developers who just want to use it to learn. They are still very full-featured.

It would also be interesting to see a Napster-like subscription model. Where, say you pay $30/month to download software, which could include anything from any developers who are a part of the network, and each month you are issued a new code to continue running the software.

Then it's more like paying for a utility like your internet connection, which is much easier for most people to manage. The thrill of always trying something new is there also, and when people stop paying, the software stops working!

Of course, people may crack that as well, but far more people would keep paying, since they would have full support and upgrade options.

To judge from some of the replies in this thread, many KVR members seem to have more than a little sympathy with warez users. This is deeply shocking to all honest users of software.

What I suggest is that rather than risk infection by exploring trojan-ridden Internet warez sites, why not start our investigations right here at KVR. There seem to be plenty of members with HIGHLY SUSPECT attitudes. What's the betting that many of them are using ILLEGAL CRACKED SOFTWARE?

Let's make a list of everyone who posts in threads like this saying that it's okay to use warez, everyone does it, software costs too much, etc - you know the tired old excuses.

Warez use seems to be like drug use. I've read that many CRIMINAL warez users download hundreds of programs they'll never even use. It's an addiction, just like crack cocaine. But it's WORSE than crack cocaine because addicts only harm themselves and they deserve all they get. Warez users harm EVERYONE by forcing hard-pressed companies like Steinberg to invest millions on dollars in copy-protection thus making software more expensive for HONEST users.

Here's my suggestion. We'll search the KVR archives for members who've made posts sympathetic to warez use and put them on a blacklist of unsound members.

Whenever one of the blacklisted members posts here asking for feedback or help of any kind, we'll immediately post to the thread informing everyone that they're a blacklisted warez-sympathiser (and probable warez user) and are not to be given any help, feedback, whatever.

Any member who ignores our request will be immediately added to the blacklist.

The blacklist will also be sent to all major audio software developers, the BSA, FBI, NSA and Interpol, so they can instigate their own investigations concerning the ILLEGAL content of the blacklistees' hard-drives.

Where their place of work is known, we can also contact their employers and inform them of their employee's sympathy with warez. Hopefully they'll soon be looking for another job!

If they have websites, we can contact the ISPs to have them removed.

Policing, like charity, should begin at home, so let's clean up KVR and get rid of all the warez kiddies so that it's a fit place for honest, upright men like you and me.

While your doing your research, do some into scatalogical comments also & then you could send the bottom inspectors around to make sure that the scatalogically inclined aren't wearing the same underwear for unhealthily long periods of time.
In fact get in touch with homeland security in the u.s. I CANT EVEN BELIEVE YOU f**king SAID THAT!!! That is the worst idea i've ever seen.. This soudnds like a good 'ol witch hunt to me. So put my f**king name on that blacklist! I would be honored to be disliked by such an arrogant asshole. If proposing a valid argumentmakes me a sympathiser, then put me on the list. Using software that you didnt pay for does not have the "EXACT SAME" negative consequences as stealing hardgoods. It might have negative consequences in a large scale- long term way..
