BTW tankgirl, that's some of the most back-asswards shit I've read at KvR. Get a bigger perspective.
Call the police on his cousin? WTF?
To get my brother to use completely legit software, I had to install all the good freebies on his comp, and then bug him endlessly until he bought FL Studio. That's all it took.

It's a proven fact that pirated software (Warez, DVD's, PS2 games etc) are principle sources of funds for all manner of criminal activities, including terrorist organisations.TMA wrote:Lovesign Wrote:

So warez funds terrorism eh ?

Don't think that just because they have one eye that they cant sword fight very well, because they still can. Also, WHich would you use more in a fight. A badass hook, or a boring ass regular hand?

TBH if WilliamK & whomever else wants to spend some time doing this, more power to 'em.
Personally I just don't think it will have much effect.
I think a more effective action than trying to go after 'warez' sites & irc groups (very hard to police) is for software developers to get together & take some concerted action against those twats at ebay.
As many have stated ebay's attempts at dissuading piracy are lame & half-assed, they're just interested in making money.
The bad thing is that you could end up buying something there that looks legit & isn't - there's an item or two i'm actually interested in, but the starting bid prices have me wondering if y'know what I mean.
While the items i'm looking at are kinda borderline suspicious anyone of us could go there now do a search for 'native instruments' 'steinberg' or 'reason' & find a huge list of people selling cd's with this software on for a few quid.
Not rocket science is it?
Get ebay sorted out, not only are they distributing this shit but they're asking money for it & sometimes skanking the more ignorant into believing it's actually legit.

Question: The RIAA tracks and reports I.P. addresses of people who up/download a certain number of songs, and/or songs that people are illegally sharing, right?
So maybe you could start/get an organization to do the same for warez?

Great topic WilliamK, serious problem, thorny issues, and no simple answers. Lest I get blacklisted with Arke, let me say that I do not condone Warez and software piracy in any way. I say that with absolute sincerity. I side with WilliamK. I too have been ripped-off in the intellectual property arena. I know what it feels like. Over some time, allowing for mulling over the ideas, we will no doubt settle on a course of action somewhere between communism and McCarthyism.
Remember that at this point this is merely a dialogue, a throwing out of ideas and thoughts, freely - a brainstorming thing. An action team will coalesce over time, and something may get done to fight piracy.
Let the games proceed.

You are screwed now, Arke.Oops, shit. Looks like I'm on the blacklist.

Hey, not to toot my own horn here, but I thought the subscription idea was pretty damned good. It's working to reduce pirating of mp3's, why wouldn't it work for software?

Maybe we could create a community, where we can post about sites we find, what we can do to take those down, etc
To judge from some of the replies in this thread, many KVR members seem to have more than a little sympathy with warez users. This is deeply shocking to all honest users of software.
WAREZ IS STEALING!!!!!
Let's be quite clear about this.
What I suggest is that rather than risk infection by exploring trojan-ridden Internet warez sites, why not start our investigations right here at KVR. There seem to be plenty of members with HIGHLY SUSPECT attitudes. What's the betting that many of them are using ILLEGAL CRACKED SOFTWARE?
Let's make a list of everyone who posts in threads like this saying that it's okay to use warez, everyone does it, software costs too much, etc - you know the tired old excuses.
Warez use seems to be like drug use. I've read that many CRIMINAL warez users download hundreds of programs they'll never even use. It's an addiction, just like crack cocaine. But it's WORSE than crack cocaine because addicts only harm themselves and they deserve all they get. Warez users harm EVERYONE by forcing hard-pressed companies like Steinberg to invest millions on dollars in copy-protection thus making software more expensive for HONEST users.
You're right, WilliamK, something needs to be done RIGHT NOW!
Here's my suggestion. We'll search the KVR archives for members who've made posts sympathetic to warez use and put them on a blacklist of unsound members.
Whenever one of the blacklisted members posts here asking for feedback or help of any kind, we'll immediately post to the thread informing everyone that they're a blacklisted warez-sympathiser (and probable warez user) and are not to be given any help, feedback, whatever.
Any member who ignores our request will be immediatel added to the blacklist.
The blacklist will also be sent to all major audio software developers, the BSA, FBI, NSA and Interpol, so they can instigate their own investigations concerning the ILLEGAL content of the blacklistees' hard-drives.
Where their place of work is known, we can also contact their employers and inform them of their employee's sympathy with warez. Hopefully they'll soon be looking for another job!
If they have websites, we can contact the ISPs to have them removed.
Policing, like charity, should begin at home, so let's clean up KVR and get rid of all the warez kiddies so that it's a fit place for honest, upright men like you and me.
BTW, it's good that you broke off relations with your thieving cousin, but you don't say whether you reported him to the police? I sure hope so. I reckon a ten-year stretch is about the right medicine for low-down scum like that.
Right then, let's get down to it!
I'm going to start searching the archives right now. Do you think we should form a committee, Bill? Some sort of organisation? How about a name?
I propose the, Clean Up Community Kvr Opposition Organisation.
Let me know if you like it!
I CANT EVEN BELIEVE YOU fkucing SAID THAT!!! That is the worst idea i've ever seen.. This soudnds like a good 'ol witch hunt to me. So put my fkucing name on that blacklist! I would be honored to be disliked by such an arrogant asshole.
So I'm to understand that you won't be joining the Clean Up Community Kvr Opposition Organisation (CUCKOO for short).

Your the empire, were the rebel resistance
[edit]it was indeed exquisite trolling, & while I had suspicions the piss was being taken that went right over my head, top dollar [/edit]
