I love the loud open hi-hat! I am still working on the track more.

I was programming a beat for a reggae artist once and he flipped when I used an open hat, denouncing the beat as "soca". This might have been descriptive, and it was certainly not what he wanted, but he just freaked that I would do something against "the rules".

Mad Professor made a Soca DUB once with all open HH!

yeah reggae is more tight usually but DUB is freedom!

Reggae's superficial simplicity is deceptive. The trade-off in reggae drumming is that you need to keep the hat very straight the busier the kick and snare are, but you can get some very cool things happening with intricate hat patterns that sound great with phasing, flanging or filtering but you have to make the kick and snare very sparse, a one drop is ideal and pretty much always works. This even holds true for programming dancehall beats, the intricacy must be in one place or the other, high hat or drums, but the other has to be very straight and fairly sparse. Intersting about Mad Professor, though, I'll want to hear that sometime. Dub mixing tecniques can be applied to any music. That's where the fun starts.

The best part of my job is doing the dub mixes when I'm working on a reggae album. We haven't done any lately, so maybe I need to call the client instead of waiting for the call.

pw's cut has me thinking that Modelonia will be a killer dub synth. Of course, that's because it's a killer synth in the first place. With Modelonia, effects from Swoosh Machine, plus the vintage keys in EVE and drums from DK+ and then add Morphing Delay, you'd have a complete Dash Dub pack. Hmm... do I smell a bundle?

@john- For me, Dub is, like you have indicated, more about an approach to mixing rather than a genre as such, even though possibly many many purists would disagree. I really come to dub through a bunch of lo-fi breakbeat, experimental and digidub artists from the music scene in Sydney, and this track with modelonia is definitely inspired by one of them, Jeff Dread.

To show my lack of socialization into dub, reggae, and dancehall proper...I have no idea what 'soca' is

But now, back to Modelonia... I think, amongst other things, it is a great great VSTi for digidub sounds. I just love it for bass, it is extremely punchy and solid, and all sorts of interesting pluck and stab tones can be conjured up.It is also good to keep in mind that Modelonia is pretty much a (very complex) sound generating engine. Meaning, there are not alot of effects on board, and this has to be kept in mind when demoing presets, and in the sound design process itself.

I'm really surprised there hasn't been a lot more discussion on this synth around here. Or have I missed the threads on it?

I have a number of good synths already, but I'm always on the lookout for something novel and with some new sound generating characteristics.

I have Tassman3 but it is almost unusable on my machine in terms of cpu. How is the usage on Modelonia? Would you guys who know say that is it comparable to say Cameleon, D'Cota and say Minimonsta? I have no problem working with those synths.

I'm asking because the demo (which I'm downloading now) apparently uses more cpu than the release version will. So maybe not a good indicator. Although... I guess if the demo version works out okay, then the release will be even better, right?

I was also going to upgrade to Masterverb5, but I might get Modelonia first in order to take advantage of the introductory pricing. Then get the verb a bit later.

Modelonia has been well-behaved for me, CPU-wise (laptop with 1.7ghz Centrino).

FWIW, CPU usage improvement was one of the big advantages of upgrading from Tassman3 to Tassman4. Word is Tassman5 is coming (eventually), so grab Modelonia today while it's still on pre-release price, and then decide whether to go to T4 now or T5 later, after you have Modelonia (which does conical-bore instruments - another thing T4 doesn't do).

Interesting Synth but in a way very special! Very nice Pads and emulations of brass or winds!
I dunno if its my monitors (Im not in the studio) but I had the impression some sounds come in very high freq's... ? right ? or not?

Possible bug on 1.0 full... in Tobybear's minihost, moving the plucked to sustained slider scrozzles the preset name on several presets (Calypso Tuner in particular, but several others as well). In fact, as I move and pause the slider, I get different sets of non-letter characters in the preset box.

Also, if I click the "?" the "about" page says it's still 0.9b.

But it sounds great!
