Some people think they need a "reason" to break contact with a family member. They feel guilty about it otherwise. I'm not a licensed family counselor, but I am a gambler and I'd bet money there is more to the relationship between these cousins than playstation games.
Okay we are talking about a very intelligent and talented software designer here. He designs, builds, and sells software for a living. Is he expected to not be angry about a relative who steals softwares from honest software designers. I think that would be akin to expecting the parent of a child who has been molested by a relative to simply forget the "incident." The rapist is "just a person like you and me," is what you all are trying to get us to believe. Try telling that to the parent of a child victim and see what their reaction is.

Part of the problem here is white collar versus blue collar crime. It's easy to detest an action and the perpetrator if there is blood or pain and a crime scene, or a missing car or tangible item. But white collar crime - in this case stolen software - is more difficult to get an emotional handle on unless you are the one who is directly harmed. Software theft is rape of the psyche, and less palpable to the observer, generally. Steal a car and get and you go to prison for 5 years or more and make restitution. Steal millions in retirement funds and you get a couple of years in a federal spa and get to keep the money in your offshore accounts. White collar crime is often invisible to the eye, intangible, often very complicated law, and therefore often ignored.

Victims are often wrongfully attacked rather than supported. WilliamK is, in this case, applying peer pressure on a thief to stop his pirating.

WilliamK I am sorry that your program was cracked and stolen and sold or given away by leeching 3rd parties. You have my sincere sympathy and support. I congratulate you for making the huge comeback that you have made in recent months. YOu have every right to be proud enough of your profession to defend it from piracy. :) :) :) :D

lol other than being a thief is he that bad of a person? is this a really good reason to dislike a person, especially a relative. you make jesus cry

but you dont know that for sure. dont assume too much there. perhaps he's self righteous.

look the war against piracy is in vain. its just like the war on drugs and the war on terrorism. if this guy thinks that a bunch of do-good "musicians" can stop it by complaining, being angry and getting a few piracy website shut down, he's a moron! The majority of piracy takes place outside of websites, in p2p networks. Accept the world for what it is - a place where people have and people don't so naturally, you'll have theft and thus piracy. people are greedy and you can't change human nature. why dont you be proud of yourself for being moral and not subjegate those who aren't. grow up.

and in short make music and mind ya business! no one likes a snitch, money. lol

You pretty much nailed it on the head.

And now the war begins...

I understand you're upset, and I'm not a software developer, but it really is useless. I'm not trying to defend warez, I'm just being realistic. If the world governments can't get piracy to go away, what makes you think a few KVR people can?

12 Pages of utter whinge-toss. C'mon, it's a pretty elementary fact that piracy has been with us since the dawn of man. Who are you to try and change the world.

OT/OT - When did they term "piracy" start being applied in this manner anyway?

"piracy, robbery committed or attempted on the high seas. It is distinguished from privateering in that the pirate holds no commission from and receives the protection of no nation but usually attacks vessels of all nations."

You see, there's no similarity whatsoever to the original definition of piracy (especially since some so called "pirates" do, to an extent, have the protection of the country they are in......and they don't have excellent boats.)

It's pretty much akin to calling aerobics instructors ninjas.

we are the ones who are participating in a way in piracy by not doing anything about it... we are therefore responsible for piracy, although we are not directly software and musical pirates, and hence we should try to reform the view of the modern-day pirate; which is that software is free and can be taken from anywhere by paying only the internet ocnnection

Post

Look. Piracy exists because of the fundamental law of money - some have it, some don't. Now, if this were people stealing food to survive.. would you still damn them to hell?

It's really no different with anything else. Some people *feel* they need some things to survive, and if those *feelings* are strong enough to convince them stealing is the way, well.. all I know is I can respect someone for following their feelings and thoughts more than I can someone who follows the pack because it's safer.

I used to use warez quite a lot when I was a kid, but as I've grown older two things have happened. My conscience has begun to manifest itself more outwardly, and a lot more independent developers are around than there used to be.

I use EnergyXT as my main host, and it costs roughly £20. Now at that price, no one should really be stealing software.

But most of the people stealing the software are of the "OMG! LOLZ STEINZBURG! LOLZ!" variety.

No one to really concern yourselves about.

And remember......a fair amount of the late 80's, early 90's electronic music was built on "liberated" copies of cubase on the atari st, and buckets of, at the time, cheap as hell analog synths. I wonder how much damage that done to Steinberg?

I disagree with you there. Are we participating in murder just because it happens and we leave catching the murderer up to the police? Of course not. Piracy is the same thing. Don't get arrogant and start thinking (or implying) you've never done anything wrong. We've all done our share of wrongs and we no have right to "reform" anyone, yeah? Leave that up to the companies and the authorities to investigate these things.

Agree, Ildon ...
We've all done something wrong at a given time... sometimes by ignorance or deliberated... but people tend to see things different as far as they're concerned.

He wrote WusikStation vsti - see the first post that started the thread back on page 1 - look at the signature. :D WilliamK wrote WusikStation and apparently it's been cracked.

Anyone who hangs here who can't feel some kind of sympathy, who rationalizes piracy, is nothing more than one of the pirate leeches themselves. When you look in the mirror in the morning, ... well, just how do you look yourself in the mirror?

Go ahead, make some cute remark, and prove that you support the leeches. Or maybe you are one of the leeching thieves.

You're a prick Roger. Yes, see, it is easy to be as ignorant as yourself. You're not achieving anything.

Good show old boy with the "you're either with us or against us" mentality... learn that one from the Prez?

I suppose Freud was an idiot for trying to rationalise things too huh?

That's a little unfair. He never said pirating was right. He was giving his honest, realistic opinion. I can only speak for myself when I say I feel for WilliamK as much as I can, and I really like the kind of person and developer he is, but many of you guys aren't being realistic enough, and that's what we're saying.
