What a stupid remark. Well, with that logic I guess you better count Ernst Nathorst-Boos as a "pirate leech".

Ernst Nathorst-Boos of Propellerhead Software wrote:"No one really knows what the software issue is all about", adds Ernst. "I can illustrate with a story. I have three children; the oldest is 16. When Napster arrived, he started downloading songs like crazy. And he got to find out about so many new bands that he never heard about, which also meant that he started buying CDs like a lunatic. Then Napster disappeared, and he stopped buying as many records as he used to, because where is his source now? There's the radio, but he's not interested in the music that's played in the radio. And MTV? No! I'm saying that I can understand what the record industry is saying, but I can also show examples of the opposite. I think it's the same thing with software piracy. It is a major problem for us, but no one actually knows the mechanisms behind it. No one knows how many of these people bought the program who wouldn't actually have been your customers otherwise."

Go ahead, make some cute remark, and prove that you support the leeches. Or maybe you are one of the leeching thieves.
considering that i've never f**ked anyone without their consent or left any babies behind or forced any of them bitches to get an abortion or have done any dui or molested little children or whatever, i can look at myself in the mirror plenty well. in fact this forum is so full of guys and most guys i know have been complete assholes when it was to their advantage, especially with women, more than once. so how do you look at yourself in the mirror? i'd take a decent warez user over any of those guys any given day.

and for the record, i got the W1 promo deal. won't upgrade, but won't use a crack, either. just got audiomulch, eXT, liveslice and probably some other music apps, during the last few months. oh, right, donations for asynth, karmafx blabla...

So, because I try and understand the reasons, deliberate them with fellow individuals and offer ideas and solutions that are not so "black & white" as "Do or be damned", I am tarred with the same brush and must be classed as a loony liberal leftie ??

As someone else here has said, this kind of thing has been going on since the dawn of man. People copying books, pictures, music, in fact anything and passing it off as their own and making profit from it. It's wrong, yes, but it ain't nothing new and it will take a lot more than a tiny crusade to stop it.

If Wusikstation has been cracked, it's sad. I own it, love it and appreciate William's hard work. I have also seen at close quarters, the effect that warez and it's like has had on an individual and his family. This individual was part of the sound design team of one of the biggest instrument manufacturers in the world, responsible for a lot of the things we take for granted in the music world today. His expertise has been used by many well known musicians, some of which are venerable "gods". Then, when the company he was working for found the going very tough as a result of the proliferation of warez, his contract was terminated and that was that. No income, a wife and child to feed and clothe and a mortgage to pay. He was reduced from industry stalwart to a curry delivery guy in a matter of weeks. Thankfully, he has now re-emerged and has adapted to the climate and has found various methods of using his talents in the music industry and has started back on the road to some form of stability. Very soon, we will all be using his sounds and material more often than we will know :)

The moral of this story ? Warez (or whatever name you want to give it) is bad, but the really talented guys will evolve, adapt and re-emerge stronger.

A major developer once said "I know a lot of my material is cracked, but those that use it would never have bought it anyway, so what do I lose ? Infact I get free advertising. If someone uses a cracked copy, and they have the real talent to use it, they will buy it because they get the support and the extras you don't get with a cracked version"

That's one way of looking at it, I guess. There are many ways to combat warez. William's plan of releasing WS V1 at a very low price is a good one, whether or not it was intended that way.

But rest assured, you will never irradicate it, because that is impossible. There will always be one person able to do the cracking, one person to distribute it and one person to use it. Whilst it is admirable to try, you will ultimately fail. Sometimes fighting is not the answer, just being more clever.

The attitude, however, that you are either for or against is misguided, misinformed and wrong. It's the very attitude that has caused so much wrong in the world today. Use your brain and develop your own point of view.

P.S I just looked and saw that many others have beaten me to a similar reply. That's what I get from having to deal with my 18 month old daughter whilst writing long winded posts on KvR ;)

I think we should persecute everyone and just be done with it- that way you get rid of all the potential warez-users as well as the one who're currently warzin'... none of this silly communist 'turning people in' rubbish- just planet-sized dongles hanging out of the back of every electrical unit in the house- or trillion-character serial numbers... yes, I joke-

Everyone pretty much has been punished, no? PACE and other dongle companies that release horribly buggy and unstable software run rampant (the reason why I can't use MOTU Symphonic Instrument that I paid 300 USD for!) Not to mention the cost of some software has increased a lot because of piracy. Piracy also gives these companies excuses to sell their stuff for more, without any proof that they're losing profit, but that's a different story. ;)

Edit: Funny how we, the people who buy the software, get punished with copy-protection. It just gives pirates more incentive to warez software.

Well, as Ernst Nathorst-Boos says no one really knows all of the ramifications of piracy. I'm not aware of any consise studies that have been done to examine the problem so I tend to agree with him.

Conceivably, a case could be made that the viral advertising aspect of warez cancels out the sales loss and the whole thing could just very well be a wash. No one knows. I see anecdotal evidence that people, who have discovered a piece of software through a cracked version, have later bought a legitimate version. This certainly isn't the norm for all cases but again, may show that there is some sort of balancing effect and benefit to the viral advertising idea.

It's all just speculation. One thing that is very clear, to me at least, is that the smaller developers, with a narrow range of products, will have a harder time surving under this dynamic. Obviously companies with a broader range of products and better distribution outlets will be better equiped to make a greater profit. Certainly Bill Gates found a way to become one of the richest men in the world despite the rampant piracy of his products.

Lol this thread is cracking me up ...

Persecute now hahah

Warez is wrong
Driving with alcohool in your blood is criminal
Driving under influence is criminal
Copying music for your friends or family is wrong
Same goes for books and any intellectual rights where u were not given the rights to do so.
inappropriate speed in cities etc is criminal
and the list goes on...

What now ? we should re-open camps to burn the sinners ?

"the one without sins should cast the first stone"

You know what else is wrong? Charging 99 cents/99p for a 128kbps aac drm'd music file, or installing rootkits on peoples computers to stop them copying a cd they paid for or creating copy protection that uses processor cycles and memory that should be being used by the music engine itself. The problem here is, it's the "good guys" who do that.

As i wrote earlier ... the developper of something is the one who deserves the money, end of story and this is not negotiable.

no need for that the make a 'patriot act' or use ways from the 3rd Reich to make things change. No matter how hard you protect your project...if people don't want to buy it, they just won't, still some folks with morality will find normal to buy it (the way it's got to be).

well hard to compare families who were living their lives peacefully and taken away to get burned, with people having relations with terror acts imo. Still in a witch hunt there's always innocents taken in the storm
