Ok, I'm not going to look at this thread for one hour. By the time I check back, I want the warez issue, existence of God, and best reverb issues finally solved.

Ok, I must say, I'm thinking to hard on this. Yes, we are all guilty somehow of something, so we can't act like we are better than anyone. I understand this.
What I think is the best way to act against Warez, is to teach people is wrong, but not act like a supreme-warrior against people that do.
Too much anger bring you to the dark site...

You know, it did occur to me that of all the warez categories, it is interesting that we're talking about software for creating music, which is a rather noble undertaking in many ways -- the music, not the warez. In other words, people who use this cracked software are interested in using it for an art form. Not saying this makes warez a good thing. Just noting that the end goal isn't something maliciioius or anti-social. If any of this even matters?jplanet wrote:Ok, I'm not going to look at this thread for one hour. Interesting point. Though if anyone stole one of my guitars for the noble purpose of making music, I wouldn't sleep until I'd hunted them down and eviscerated them with my bare hands.eduardo_b wrote: You know, it did occur to me that of all the warez categories, it is interesting that we're talking about software for creating music, which is a rather noble undertaking in many ways -- the music, not the warez. Very good point.loomchild wrote:...If you want to fight warez, do your best for the living conditions to be little more even all over the world. Why do you think most counterfeit products originate from South East Asia, Russia or Latin America and are primarily sold and used there? The amount of money it costs a citizen from a Western country to purchase a piece of software is relatively way smaller than what it costs citizen of many poorer countries. Should we answer those people that they should have the hobbies they can afford? " Sorry guys, why don't you use rubbish tape recorders?, you don't need that Cubase thingumabob".
The technological gap between the economic "North" and the economic "South" is widening each day more. If warez can help reducing it in a way, then most of your holier than thou attitudes are worthless and finally morally questionable.
I agree that it may not justify the fact that some people who may afford the software they use illegitimately do actually use it. But let's face it, globalization is well...a global thing. If you can sell your products to wherever in the world one can think of with distribution costs close to 0 due to electronic shipping (and increase the range of your potential custommers by that) then you have to face the opposite effect(the fact that warez being cracked by people from poorer regions of the world can be bought/used by richer people. The issue is about the balance between the twos...
Just to add to that, I live and work in S.E.Asia and I can confirm - piracy is rife here..!
Just about everyone I've met here buys pirated CDs, VCDs, DVDs etc. and it isn't going to stop... Why..? Because those people simply can't afford non-pirated equivalents. Prices are totally out of proportion to incomes.
Average income in Malaysia - RM1,400 per month (less than 500 USD).
Cost of windows XP - RM500.
Music CDs here (legit) RM100 to RM200.
The average Malaysian isn't going to fork out several hundred Ringgit for a couple of CDs (or software) when he can go to the local night market and buy it for 5 Ringgit.
Funny thing is, the hardware is quite cheap - PCs for RM750 and DVD players for RM100.
There are many Western companies operating all over S.E.Asia because they can cut manufacturing costs with low wages, and increase profits - customers in the West benefit from this with cheaper prices (colour TVs $99 etc.).
These big companies are constantly looking for new markets in developing countries, so they push their products in order to create demand.
Well guess what... It's working..!
A lot of households have a PC - DVD now and the number is increasing. As more people in Asia buy more hardware, there is going to be a corresponding increase in sales of pirated software (warez to you and me).
The only way to combat that is to strike a fairer balance between the cost of the product and the income of the consumer.
By the way, I bought my software in the UK before I came out here (still on WIN98 and Logic 5.5) and although I've been tempted on occasion so upgrade for peanuts, I haven't endulged so far.
Probably gonna get a Mac next year anyway.

But that's because then you couldn't use it anymore (it's your only one and it's gone). Whereas in the case of someone copying some of your music software you wouldn't even notice (suddenly there are two).selfconstruct wrote:Though if anyone stole one of my guitars for the noble purpose of making music, I wouldn't sleep until I'd hunted them down and eviscerated them with my bare hands.
