Confused by placement of MIDI controller mappings.

Hi Folks,
Maybe I'm going about this the wrong way, so if you know of a better way to hook up an 02R96 with Traction please let me know. I am running Windows XP x64 so the normal Yamaha support of controllers via USB (and Studio) does not work (they don't have 64 bit drivers yet).

So I used the MIDI mapper under "Automation" to do a mapping for each fader and pan. Works great. I am surprised that MIDI controller mapping is not located under the EXTERNAL CONTROLLERS settings page (that's where I would put all external controller related stuff). I'm also surprised that, having hand crafted the settings, I can't save them as an External Controller or MIDI mapping and use them in a different edit. The way it was implemented is Edit specific and must be painfully re-done for every edit. That impelementation does not make sense, given the way I will use that feature. Also, if it could be saved I could post the work for other users.

I could not get the Yamaha 02R96V2 to use one of the existing external controllers (Universal or C4) via the MIDI.

Any ideas or help connecting the 02R96V32 with Traction will be appreciated,

Sorry, no help-- but I wanted to chime in and agree that the "external controllers" page is a bit mis-used, IMO. People routinely wonder why their controllers aren't working as expected, because of this page.

That page has a dedicated purpose, which is support of control surfaces in the vein of the MCU or the BCR2000. At the moment only two external controllers are supported, hence only two are available from the list.

Automation mapping and external controller support are very different animals if you think about it. External controllers integrate far more tightly into a host than does a MIDI slider/rotary unit. For Tracktion to really work properly alongside your 02R, it'd need to have a specific understanding of the device far beyond simply assigning a given fader to a track.

If you haven't already, cast your vote in the stickied thread on this very subject.

See above - you haven't created an external controller framework. Ideally the 02R shold be following the selected track, not just allowing you to control a handful of preselected ones.
or MIDI mapping and use them in a different edit.
This actually falls more under the geneal "why can't I create template projects?" FR. Being able to recall mappings might be useful, but if you think about it, it wouldn't actually work in Tracktion. Template edits on the other hand are probably needed. There is a simple workaround for creating template edits in Tracktion though (try searching for it, the thread should be easy enough to find - it may even be stickied).

True, but the way you are using it is not the way it was intended to be used. Automation mapping really works best for quickly assigning a MIDI control to a specific plugin parameter.

Unless the 02R speaks MCU, you wont either. They don't send standard MIDI.
ny ideas or help connecting the 02R96V32 with Traction will be appreciated,
There are a handful of things you could consider, which one you use is probably a matter of taste and specific requirements:

The two that spring to mind for me are:

1) template edit plus if the 02R doesn't send MMC, some hackery with Bome's MIDI translator (or mac equivalent) to convert whatever it does send to MMC.

2) a great deal of hackery with a MIDI translator to try and convert its output to something MCUish (not sure how feasible this one is.

Personally, if I were you I'd plump for ~1 right now and add a vote for o2r support to beno's external controller thread.

THe O2R-96 can emulate a Mackie Control. I would use that option instead of mapping everything by hand.

i think vally ment the C4 not the BCR2000 before any bcr owners get to happy :hihi:

allthough there is a sysex file to use the bcr2000 as a mcu here http://www.geocities.jp/mackicrokontrol/index.html

& a display app that will emulate the MCU display for ANY controller that emulates the MCU here http://www.xmlconsulting.co.nz/husker/huskervu.htm

Thanks much for your input. Valley, I very much appreciate your clarification of the intentions of automation input vs my usage. It makes more sense now.

Beno, This is good news. I heard before that the 02r96v2 could emulate the Mackie, which is why I stared this quest to make it work. I could not find a setting on the 02R96 that worked. The setttings are for General Daw, Cubase, protools etc.. But, I'll check with the Yamaha forum to see if they know how to set the 02r up for Mackie support. that would solve everything.

DJsubject, I'll check out that MCU emulator to see if it can help me find a Yamaha MCU mode.

Thanks all!

Actually, I meant BCR2000, I just should have clarified that at present the BCR is not supported.

If you haven't already, try going into the external controllers tab and selecting the MCU for the input your 02r is on. Then try working through the list of emulation and operation modes the 02r supports and see if one works properly.

I'll Bet the Cubase setting is the MCU mode. Give that a try.

OK, here's what I've found so far by playing around with a DAW that supports many different types of controls(on my old 32-bit machine): The 02R96V2 supports multiple HUI devices. It does not work as a Mackie Control Universal or C4. Also, although the 02R96 supports MIDI, for DAW control it only supports USB-MIDI, serial or mLan (it calls mLan slot-1) because it needs to use multiple MIDI ports. Yamaha does not have drivers for x64 (64 bit) Windows yet.

Maybe that info can help the traction folks develop support for the yamaha digital mixers or save someone else the troubleshooting.

Thanks all,

And is there any possibility that i will have a use of a motorized faders in my DDX3216 in team with T2 ?
DDX3216 is controlling the tracktion just fine, but any movement in tracktion is not back on the faders - so its just like one-way controll - its making the controller useless :(
Cubase SX works just fine - i can controll my DDX3216 faders and stuff with it (automation and so on), but in T2 its not working.

Anyone knows anything about MCU emulation for DDX3216 ?

Thanks in advance.

I would add that Tracktion edit files are in XML and are pretty easy to manually edit. I've just undergone the hellish mapping process for a number of VSTs (more on that in a post later) in an edit that I'll use for a template, and have saved a lot of work. If you want to copy your mappings from edit to edit, open the file in Notepad or your favorite text editor, and look for the MAP tags under <CONTROLLERMAPPINGS>:

<MAP id="65647" channel="1" param="track 2 >> Drumatic 3 >> BD: Noise Filter Cutoff" filterid="0/1677eeba"/>

This line, for example, says "use MIDI controller id 65647 (a slider on my Radium 49) on MIDI channel 1 to control the Bass Drum: Noise Filter Cutoff on the instance of Drumatic on track 2 (which has its own id as well)".

It takes some hacking but without a MIDI learn function, it's all you can do...

Thanks ci1874, that is excellent info,
