holy ass, that was salif keita in that shlomo video. that was the best part. now THAT i would like to see.

the 3 things about beatboxers that bore me:

1) the interesting hand movements they make while theyre beatboxing
2) how they never stay with a single beat for more than about 45 seconds
3) how all their beats are in 4/4

if anyone has any videos of a beatboxer working and developing a 7/4 groove for at least 4 minutes while standing totally still, let me know. that would kick ass.

Great video! I've never heard a human beatbox do a pretend reverse beat before - and it sounded genuine!

This guy was up to a bit more of a challenge as the crowd didnt seem too hip to it at first and the mic wasnt at all specially suited for beatboxing :hail:

WTF? Have you heard ANY remotely expressive musician that stood exactly still? all the best performances I've ever seen featured the musician to be all over the place, from grunty metal screamers to violinists...

I wouldn't ever want one to do the same thing for 45 minutes.

and I've heard beatboxes do 3/4 beats, though usually as fills. Most stick to 4/4 as it is standard time sig in most cultures by a wide margin

Theres a pretty interesting human beatbox on ebaums world somewhere..

yes: tom harrell. in the videos i've seen of john coltrane, he stood still, too. miles davis didn't stand totally still all the time, just kinda wondered around the stage, but didn't bounce around like an idiot. saw jim hall in concert once, too. he sat down the whole time. the list goes on...

me neither.

yes, they do stick to 4/4 for that reason. and it bores me.

they mention the name Killa Kella on that site. i saw him live last year it was incredible. he had this multilayered bit that was like star wars sfx and big beat all in one it was nuts. and there's also Rahzel from the Roots, he's just alright though :)

Miles Davis died 14 years ago, John Coltrane died 38 years ago. I mean, great beatboxers mainly do Drum n' Bass cause it's the hardest (western) rhythm to do and are generally trying to make new sounds and effects using their mouths. How you compare that to some jazz legends who died ages ago is beyond me!
Beatboxing is mainly done in clubs where the aim is to get people jumping and dancing, not to sit down by a table, while having a beer and watch the performer.

It totally depends on the style. I watched a video clip last night of a guy doing ambient while layering sounds. He hardly moved at all.

are you serious? i always thought they did it because it's one of the easiest to do! i guess this difference of opinion indicates where this discussion will head... :?

well, i don't know why. chase asked, "Have you heard ANY remotely expressive musician that stood exactly still?" and as miles davis, et al, we/are expressive musicians and stood more or less still compared to beatboxers, i felt they were appropriate to name (granted, he did say "EXACTLY still," but since i exaggerated in the first place, i thought i could stretch it a bit). further, he indicated that my choices were not necessarily limited to genres similar to beatboxing by adding "from grunty metal screamers to violinists." would you like to rephase the question more specifically for him?

yes, yes, i know that. of course they're different atmospheres, and beatboxing has it's place... it's just that it's a place i find pretty boring. sorry...

Bernhardtjeff.
I found that clip I mentioned. Guy stands very still and basically does ambient music. But I don't know if that's your cup of tea either. He is using a delay pedal though.

I still think that Drum n' bass (and IDM) are some of the most complex beats. Sure beats Rock, Pop, Blues and Hip hop by a mile.
